Hey guys, I went for a mission to palmerston this weekend, my coupe's speedo was reading fine around the clock, untill about 20 mins into the drive, I was passing a truck, and only
doing 80mph when the needle jumped aroung past 100, and was sitting on the bit that says mph! but i haddent sped up any! it never came right, at anything over 60mph(100km/h) it just
waves around between the 60 and the other side of the dial!
but if i stop it is ok and accurate till 60mph then it happens again!
please, does anyone know what might be wrong?
cheers guys.
have a good one.
chris.

That's the early Datsun/Nissan speed limiting software working for you. Satellites travelling over New Zealand feed your vehicles progress on any given road back to the police computer in
Wanganui. If you're exceeding the posted speed limit (as you were) then the satellite downloads to your speedo and locks it's reading to the speed limit - 60 mph. If you exceed the limit
again the police computer gets the satellite to communicate with your engine management module causing valve bounce at progressively lower rpm's. In his book 'Early Datsun Electronics'
Geoff Nilson points out that the Nissan Motor Co. decided not to introduce the system to Australia in the early '70's because of the perception that Aussies don't pay attention to their
speedos or laws anyway.
There is a slim possibility that a previous owner has disabled the speed limiter in your car in which case you will probably find that the coiled spring that holds your speedo needle at
tension has broken. Hope this helps.

Sweet! :) man your a hard case! :)
and they wonder why we are so mad about the things... :)
yeah you'd be right, that would explain everything. I always wondered how the New Zealand Police managed to keep the speed down
on our Datsun Supercars...
After reading your message, it has opened my eyes, so to compensate I will fit a bigger tip to my exhaust, and replace the
spring.
cheers man, have a good one.
chris.

hey there,

u guys r all nucking futs..... as u all know, the speedo works off the tranny, with the cable spinning a small generator in the dash, the faster u go ---> the faster the cable spins ---
>more amps generated ---> the dial moves on the speedo needle moves from the resistance wire....

common problems with this speedo that u may have incounted are the generator being interfered with outside electrical forces/radation.... a mobile phone is a common problem, as with some
"aftermarket" clocks around the dash...

try to remove all of these possibilites as it can affect ur speedo and do permanent damage.... i that still does not work, remove the vibrator from the front seat of the car and use it
in the back... away from the DASH!!!!

cya
me!!!

ps... the speedo IS electrically controlled to my knowledge so it may be an electrical fault....

Crikey! your a worry...
... vibrators and all... it's a coupe anyways, so there's not much room in the back! oh no...
Sweet!
A generator you say, the Haynes manual doesn't have anything on the speedo, so you could be right, and I did have the mobile on too... I will go out there now and take the whole
dash off, and see what can be done, and while it's out I might play rally cars...
cheers man, Im very worried about your state of mind though... :)
