#1 SR20DE
datsun120ycoupe Posted on: 2005/6/26 3:54
I have decided to move away from A series engines and go modern, i have found a SR20DE Silvertop for a fairly cheap price from a primera.....now my question is, can primera sr20s be converted to be used as a RWD application?

i know you got it cheap, but there is already a
rwd sr20de.the head is different in a couple of ways.the obvious is where the dizzy is.out the side, not out the back.i don't know if there's a difference in the bell housing pattern, but im sure the flywheel is smaller, which means a smaller clutch.plus the throttle body points to the back.not too sure about the cooling system outlets.it's a bit of work, but you could probably do it,but if you need another head, flywheel & clutch, & inlet manifold,
it might be cheaper to track down a rwd sr20de & sell the fwd sr20 to someone else.i got a rwd sr20de from an s12 gazelle, plus gearbox & computer & wiring loom years ago.i got half way through putting it into a sunny before losing a job,& not being able to finish the conversion.

I'd be keen to get a bit more info on this topic as well. I have only seen the SR20VE Neo in FWD format. If it could be adapted to RWD it would be a ripper conversion (assuming you could get one for a reasonable price)

Is the FWD block the same as the RWD?

Could the crank angle sensor from the CA or something else be used? (probably not the CA cos it would be rotating the wrong way)

How difficult/expensive is it to get a plenum reversed?

Apart from all those hassles, the FWD SR20's are 108kW instead of 120 so unless you had a NEO it wouldnt be worth the trouble

Im well aware that there is already a RWD SR20de that is readily available from silvias but i like to be different and like a challenge so this is why i have chosen a p10 4wd sr20de.

I have read that nissan cast all the sr20 blocks the same so it should be possible to switch it around and use it north-south and bolt a silvia box onto it....fingers crossed!

The distributer will be a bitch as its mounted at the rear of the head "gearbox side*, but as Grunterhunter said, a crank angle sensor may be a good idea....but where to get one?....any ideas?

the plenum wont be a problem as it will be getting dumped as I am putting sidedrafts on it

found something out, the p10 primeras came out with 2 types of SR20s, SR20De and SR20DE *they came in T4 AWD primeras* the capitol 'E' SR20 comes with a high comp. ratio of 10:1 and is 180hp but 140hp which the lower case 'e' SR20 is.

The motor I have found is a SR20DE.....

Um, how hard is fitting a turbo CAS & coils? If you're going to get a CAS you need the coils and an ECU to run them anyway - why not put GTiR quad throttles on it & do it properly

a sr20 from a s13 is $600 over hear from an importer sure its worth the hassel with the FWD version?

Now we really have the misinformation cranking, cos I was under the impression that the 182ps version was the NEO version and distinguished from the rest of the SR20DE's from VVT rather than just higher compression and a big "E" ...... just found an article with good pics here:

Not too sure about the quality of the content though- the bloke is claiming a 13.2 1/4 from a this engine in a front driver

Ok my bad I misread the information, the engine in the T4 Primera comes with the SR20DE, it has 10:1 compression having 150PS@6400rpm (110kW or 147.5hp) and 19kg-m@4800rpm (186Nm or 137 foot-pounds).

Its about $1500-$2000 for a sr20 from a silvia with loom and ecu here in New Zealand. and anyhow, as I said i like to be different and like a challenge!
