Why do you only shorten one axle? Won't that put things off centre?

Yes, it does put the diff slightly off-centre, which is not unusual (especially in older cars - you often hear people referring to a "long" or "short" axle). This has the added advantage of balancing out the torque reaction from the driveshaft.
If you were going to use this in a modified 1200, they don't come much tougher & are a pretty straight forward conversion.

Yes feral I still have 2 left that Im playing and toying with the idea of making the left side also alloy from a piece of billet.
They are a very strong diff and have been used in turbo corolla turbo 3tc setups and rotor turbo setups in drag racing.
One such rotor corolla in NSW was making over 400hp and crazy torque with over 300 passes and is still perfect according to the owner

looking at that sprintcar diff????, you could use any diff, even and IRS diff. and mod the axle covering???? so it would bolt onto the diff..Thus the nissan IRS LSD could be used...or even a diff out of a WRX..

What we do, is shorten one axle. I use the short side axle for the 1200 long side, and then mega-shorten the long axle to be the short 1200 axle. The housing is shortened equally on both sides. On a 1200, this results in the diff being off centre by 5-15mm (can't remember). The tailshaft can deal with the alignment. (It deals with it normally in the up/down dimension)

This cuts down the expensive part of job. Machining the axles is time consuming and trashes milling tools quickly as most of the axles are quite hard.

In many diferentials, the crownwheel is in the center, so the pinion is therefore slightly off to one side. To put the pinion in the center of the rear axle assembly, & therefore on the centerline of the car, some manufacturers make one side shorter than the others.
Others dont give a rats **** & make the axles the same length, which puts the pinion slightly off-center. It works just as well either way & in some applications, shortening the long side so that a short axle can be used can work just nice. [if you're lucky] This means that this rear axle assembly uses two standard [short] axles which cuts costs
