Not sure what this thread is about, but I'd like to see comps between the A14 & A15 too. The difference being the increased stroke of the A15 crank. As for the 160hp @ flywheel, that must of cost a pretty penny to build, but necessary for competitive racing

ok,i got 71 hp at the wheels from an a15 with a medium cam,32/36 weber,gx exhaust manifold & not much else.this engine was way rich, but the standard mechanical fuel pump restricted the top end.so 75-80 is probably just a fine tune away.this was on the unigroup dyno that andrew d & craig w got their cars dyno'd.long way off their figures, but the car is already a blast to drive.just wish it had more low down torque, but this will probably come with the fine tune.probably should reco the fuel pump,or maybe see if i can adapt an l series fuel pump by changing the arm.this engine would be just as much fun in a 1000 or a 1200, because it's in a 120y coupe,& would probably make no difference if it was an a14.just my 2 cents worth.i'd say to use an a14 if thats what the rego police need,or an a15 if you can get away with it,but you could always use an a15 crank & pistons in an a14 block so the engine number looks good to those nasty, nasty rego people.

a standard fuel pump in good condition will be fine for that engine. if the pump is actually not keeping fuel up to the carb at high rpm and load, just kit it or replace it. No need for a bigger pump. The only NA A14 I've ever played around with was many years ago in my old white coupe. Standard A14 (with open chamber, oval port head) with 77mm (I think) mitsubishi pistons, 30/70 cam, twin SU and headers. 82bhp at the wheels many moons ago before I got involved with motorsport. Just a fun little daily driver.

With the light rear of a 1000 ute, & 195 tyres [thats about the practical limit] you will be able to scare yourself quite sh1*less with a 'built' 1200 or A14 engine anyway.
no offence Dodgeman, but your idea of "scared sh1tless" is a lot different from mine. i got bored after a lap passenger-ing in a triple rotor twin turbo cosmo around wanneroo - and that thing had over 350rwhp on tap. i would say you could "get yourself into trouble" with 80rwhp in a little 1000 or 1200 ute, but "scared sh1tless"...? nuh-uh. no way.

This is straight from Hot4s (I know, shame on me)
"A15 1500cc SOHC".... Seriously thats what it says
Mazda Pistons balanced rods balanced crank 30/70 Ivan Tighe Camshaft 1200GX ported/flowed head a15 valves rollmaster timing chain double valve springs block bored 100thou' twin 40mm DOCE webers (their mistake not mine, they did it twice) K&N Rampod filter Holley Blue fuel pump MSD coil Crane cams XR700 electronic ignition 88mm top gun spark plug leads... Spitfire plugs 3" exhaust
Magazine claims dyno-proven 145hp at the wheels
Then there's the one in the 1000 ute I looked at, I didnt get all the details, but: -a15 block bored I think 40thou -Mazda pistons -knife-edge(d)? crank -unsure of head but extensively ported with a15 valves -matchported to inlet running twin 45's -Electronic distributor -extractors Unsure of other specs but was built by I think Crow engines. Was made for speedway so revs to 9,000 easy Claimed 110rwkw on dyno

tighe don't do a straight 30/70 cam for an A series, so that's BS. and a 30/70 cam (280 adv dur) would only be good for about 120bhp (flywheel) max IMHO - IF (and that's a big if) everything else was optimised for it. You can rest assured its certainly not going to ever produce anything near the power claimed anyway. And twin 40s are probably going to max out around 165-170bhp (flywheel). must be those splitfire plugs Magazines and people advertising cars are no more credible than the infamous internet bhp - they're all just picking numbers they think sound impressive, based on other numbers they've heard talked about on other websites/magazines/whatever.

turbocharge it.
reliable power with correct tuning and easy torque.
if you use a correctly matched exhaust housing to a nice big compressor A/R like 0.6 or 0.7 then that equals cooler boost.
you can virtually eliminate lag with a correctly sized turbo - and get "free" power to boot.

Yeah, turbo it. You should be able to build a drawthrough turbo for about the same $$$ as a pair of sidedrafts. Best go to $$$ ration in my opinion.
