The only diference between a standard 1200 fuel pump & the 1200 GX version [twin Hitachis] is the diaphragm spring. It has a little more pressure, but not much. Go with a stock pump & wory about it if you actually suffer fuel starvation problems.

nothing wrong with trusting those who are supposedly in the know. it's when they take advantage of it that it's not right

cam would perform with twin 40's....standard fuel pump will give enough fuel, feral usually has twins and manifold going for a reasonable $$, and you know they'll be in god nik, http://datrats.com.au/ENGINES%20%26%20ENGINE%20PARTS.html
as for the su's if you can get em set up by someone who knows what they're doing you shouldn't have a problem either ?? slightly cheaper on fuel than twin 40's but they don't have quite the same audible note
one of the boys in wa had a set for cheap advertised in their virtual garage sale ??

personally .... you've got it this far - to go back to a stock cam you'd be letting yourself down
but if $$ are a big issue go for a mild street cam from a reputable supplier

Hmm the trust factor is a problem, theres always dodgy dealers out there..its just a matter of finding them!

Freak in relation to the cam, it is quite slugish pre 2200ish RPM, chugs along and doesnt pull until that point, but when it does it goes pretty well!!
The only other factor that i can think of is that it does not have any extractors (in process as we speak) and the timing chain is a bit loose and really should be replaced....Could this be an attributing factor?
Boofhead, the 'sweet sound and smell of twin 40's at full throttle' I could be in the old skool team then !!! I'll have a look around and see if there is some going cheap, should be some knocking around Tassie somewhere im thinking...

One question, what is fuel consumption like with twin 40s? From experience here??

its sorta late, and i just skimmed through all that has been said but i'm with the guy who said that he doesn't think its the camshaft.

and 20 deg retard!?!?!?!? the right amount of timing will quadriple the power feel of a motor. it just sounds a bit like you are being screwed around by someone... maybe the tuner?

i had an L18 once with flat top pistons and a ported head running a 76 degree (big) cam with twin 45's. they were taken off and a weber 32/36 was put on. it idled and ran fine. not as good top end but fine.

something aint making sense. i wouldn't be too worried about the cam unless it is massive... ask the guru feral errol. even better ring him. He Knows what he is talking about and is a very helpful guy. he also will probably have the parts you search for.

Ok lets say it aint the cam, then wat else could it be? Im still running points ignition but it isnt misfiring (only on cold mornings) its more of the car wobbles and splutters when taking off and hits a good note from 2200ish up

Yeah i mite actually give feral a call tonight and ask him the facts, or if he reads this post could you (Errol) reply to the facts presented here??

Dave the stuff about twin SUs being "a bastard to tune" is a total myth nothing could be further from the truth.

I have bought junked GX carbs and rebuilt them myself with not a clue what I was doing, fitted them to the car and had them running really well in no time at all.

They are very simple devices and certainly nothing to be scared off by.

Same with Webers...once you have the jetting right thats it... leave it. The only reason it would stuff up is that its got a clogged jet or a gasket in letting in air.
There is nothing to tune on them

those cam specs don't make sense. the lift belongs on a mild cam, and the duration is that of a race cam...

on petrol consumption .... haven't got any current figures but twin su's when driven sensibly are good on fuel, give 'em a hard time and the fuel guage will let you know
as for twin 40's the same thing goes but they will use more than su's in just cruising around.
on an old engine (A14) lots of work and big cam i was getting atleast 450+km's with twin 40 dellortos. this was in a 1000 2door, which involved roughly 50% highway and 50% town driving
