#1 Petronix Ignitor - anyone had any problems with them?
sprite63 Posted on: 2005/7/29 3:36
I have one installed - coming up to it's second year now - and it seems to be running fine but this other post about factory a series electronic distributor's from the States (in the classifieds section) has got me thinking that I should get one.

Should I just stick to the rule of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it?'

yep apparently the factory ones are low energy (ie use a standard coil). Yours would be a high energy unit and produce a much bigger spark therefore more reliable Hp figures.

that's all I needed to know - I'll stick with it then. I always carry an old set of points just in case something goes wrong anyway.

actually, the coil will determine the voltage, not the dizzy. the coils used with this unit put out 60kv, more than enough to keep it going, and about twice what the older point type coils put out.

I bought one of their 'Flame Thrower II' coils when I did the conversion - have to say that it did make a difference.

The only problem I seem to have is with the two wires coming out of the module inside the distributor... how do you make sure that they do not fold up and hit the rotor?

I have one too and I reckon its great. Cheapest solution and does the same job as the rest. I noticed the wires too but they dont seem to hit so I just dont worry about it.

It does look like they should fly up and hit, but they haven't yet. That rubber grommet seems to hold them pretty tight.

correct me if im wrong but I know that the coil producs the voltage however the module needs to be able to handle opening and closing the coil ...some can do high energy some cant. Same goes with the rotor cap and cover/cap. other wise the spark can arc to the rotor cover before its transfered to the plug.

hi all
I have one of these petronix iginitors in my worked A12 motor and everything is working fine.
I also had the same thought of the two wires getting tangled up with the rotor, when I first installed it but they seem to push down into a gap next to the distributor body and hold quite well.
I am running a standard coil with this ignitor and everything is great.
