Took the 1200 to the dyno for a tune of the Autronic last night.

Damn ignition. Let me explain what I use:
- Autronic SMC with dwell board
- Using CA18 Coilpacks
- Using Bosch 2 channel ignitor
- Using 2 channel "wasted spark" process from SMC

Basically my spark sucks.

So I plan to:
- throw away the bosch ignitor. Replacing it with the original 4 channel Nissan ignitor.
- Changing ECU to use 4 channel ignition
- replace each coil one at a time in case one of the coilpacks are playing up.

If these things don't improve things, then I'm off to go buy some CDI and external coils and leads...I've been beaten!!!

There's some discussion on whether I need to use the dwell board at all, especially when using CDI. So if I go for a CDI setup, then I'll need to have the dwellboard removed.

The car certainly feels better though.

But I'm currently left with severe ignition breakdown at about 5000revs. So the tuner (Yavuz) has kept a 4500rpm rev limit on it.. damn killjoy

Cheers,
Chris

ignition problems are usually left for us poor buggers running the standard ecu. why may i ask did you go with the bosch ignighter in the first place? i bet you can't wait to get it sorted tho... 200+kwatw?

Yeah 200+ I'm hoping. I'll be happy with 180+

I went for the bosch unit after some bad advice. I'm certainly learning how not to do things. I sometimes wonder if taking guesses would be better than accepting recommendations from experts.

It's all to do with not knowing what ECU goes with what Ignition system, dwell boards, CDI, Coil impedence etc, and the Autronic documentation is not detailed enough to make good decisions on.

I'll be a good point of reference for Autronic once this is done.

you figure out the best way.
Id go CDI expensive but well worth it once you start getting and itchy trigger finger and turn up the boost, atleast then you will still have enough spark for as much power as you could ever want.

Look at the bright side. You experiences will be a good lesson for others going down the same path ans save them from making similar mistakes.

Good luck with your next round on the dyno..

Should only take a few hours to rewire the ignition and swap out coils until it improves. If it does improve things, I'll go with that until after run-in.

I also discussed CDI with Yavuz, and he said that his experience tells him that CDI is bad for idle. And some people spend a lot of money only to be dissappointed with idle, and see no benefit. CDI is a short duration hot spark. The long spark from a regular ignition is better for idle. But for high revs.. CDI really comes into it's own. Even more so on V8s where you need twice the spark of a 4 cylinder at the same revs.

I'll end up at CDI, but I can get there in steps if need be.

Cheers.

Hey chris mine idles ok with cdi??800rpm nice and stable. Im still using factory coils with the MSD DIS4 with no problems. If I where to do it again Id probably go for the Autronic R500 CDI only because its Aussie made and same breed as the ECU Still pretty $$$ around $800 I think.
Did you try to lower the plug gap a bit?? try 0.7mm I had to do that before CDI as it would misfire with any more than 12psi.
Good luck

I didn't try the gapping, it's a pretty bad misfire at most revs. Related to heat, and revs. Yavuz just keeps saying... your ignition setup is the problem.

So I'm going back to a known solution, and work from there.

I'll probably go for the autronic CDI, good product, and I know there is accurate docs for it.

Thanks for the input and encouragement. I'm still pretty positive about it all.
