#1 Mystery Cam
datrat_dave Posted on: 2005/8/31 9:28
The infamous LAGWAGON was telling me about a cam that came out of a hot A15 that i was looking into. It has '298' stamped on the front and the engine was built by cheltenam datsun performance centre.
Leigh does not know much about it and I was wondering if any of you know the specs of a 298 ground cam?
Its like shooting fish in a barrel here but i know theres a wealth of knowledge so if anyone knows ANYTHING at all would be greatley appreciated.

Cheers
Dave

A 298 is about 74 duration cam which isn't that hot.

A stock cam is about 260 and an all racing cam is about 330.

Hope that helps.

Thanks very much killer1200, would you have any links to what specs this might fit in as? Like mild, tourqey... etc i.e. cams relativley the same as this

I was kinda hoping that it wasnt that hot.

Cheers
Dave

Well I'd say its a hot street cam or a mild race cam.

It's hard to say because it also depends on what lift it has, but it would make power from about 2500-7000 if thats what you wanted to know.

killer1200 is assuming that's the duration of the cam and not a grind number...

best idea would be to dummy it up in an engine and measure the lift and duration at .050" That's the only way you're really going to find out what it is.

Yeah that did cross my mind and I don't know of people that stamp the duration on the front of the cam, but I can only work with the information that I'm given.

I have just had a 72 degree cam ground & that has 104 stamped in the end. Maybe that is just a number that has nothing to do with what grind it is. Maybe who ever ground that cam stamps a some sort of referance number for there records.
Just a thought.

It would be good to see if Cheltham Datsun Performance center have any history or recollection of the camshaft that i am talking about, Coup1200 you might be onto something with the referance number there.
I might give them a call, would anyone know the number? I'll have a look online aswell...

L18_B110 yeah dummying it up would be the easiest way to find but its when is the problem (i.e time).
On that topic, the best information really ive found on cam timing is...

http://www.alcester-racing-sevens.com/cam_timing.htm

Its a 4AGE i think but same purpose.
Quite handy!

How much have people paid for adjustable cam ssprockets exactly? I got quoted $155 (from memory) for a new timing chain and sprocket kit (non adjustable). Is this a ####y price?

Thanks heaps guys
Dave
