I just purchased a 1000 coupe and the multiplier says I can go to a 1.6Litre turbo motor

I was thinking of buying a CA18 motor and box and changing the block to a CA20 block and stroking it, then rebadging the block to CA16


My questions are:

1. has anyone done this before ?
2. Can the engine number be changed easily to CA16 from CA20? so it can be registered and they won't know.
3. is there any major problems doing this conversion. I assume I have to custom make a tensioner for the heads, but Is a cam belt going to be hard to get etc? also heard that CA18 don't have a distributer
4. will any CA box go behind a CA20 e.g. CA18 turbo 5 speed

the fines for re-birthing a car (which also mean changing engine numbers) are going to be $20,000 soon.

and if you crash and kill someone, they'll pick apart your car and find it is NOT a CA16, but a CA20. then you lose your third party personal insurance and have to

a) go to prison
b) pay for someone's medical expenses for the rest of their waking life if they DO survive and
c) live with the knowledge that if you had just settled for a few hp less you wouldn't be in this mess you call daily life now.

so, why not start with a CA16 block and fit a CA18 crank?

I think CA 16s and 18s share the same stroke.

Does anyone know if a ca20 crank wil fit a ca18 turbo

Use the CA16 block, and turbo it.

CA20 is a truck motor...nothing like a CA16/CA18 except they share a bellhousing and head stud pattern.

Good luck all the same. The CA18 is a very tight squeeze in a 1000, just thinking about the sump makes me want to leave the country.

just bolt all the bits from a ca18 onto a ca16 and have more fun then the car can handel anyrate

the obvious one, why not build a strong ca16det?? it will require a little more boost then a 18 but who cares it will run 10's anyway!!

ca20det is a good thing to do too! but not a the expense of 20 years in jail!!
