The Datsun J series was copied from the engine that was used in early 1950's Austin A40's and other models.

Dats-hot's on the mark.
Don't forget, Nissan was a partner of Austin, and they made -- not copies -- but actual Austins under license. The agreement called for Nissan to make most of the components locally within 4 years. So the Austin engines made in Japan actually were an improvement. For example, Nissan could only get good forged steel, so the cranks were better. The lessons learned from Austin were of course applied to Datsun development. The E-series engine (predecessor to J-series) were an improvement over the Austin design. Higher compression, shorter stroke, better airflow. The A-series was the all-new engine, sharing nothing with the Austin engine. It was based on an all-new lightweight casting.

I think we are getting off track. At the end of the day the Datto doesn't have to perform the same functions as the Honda so that can be used as a performance advantage. For example, it doesn't have to idle well or get good fuel economy, doesn't have air conditioning, power steering, power windows, power everything. Heck, if I want it to go faster, it doesn't need a back seat, spare wheel, jack or sound system. The best thing about the datsun is that its not the Honda but both are fun.

Should be easy enough to do.
I had a 120Y that did what you were after. A15, Exhaust, cam , compression and twin SU's. Electronic ignition and valve springs, and a bit of port work. low 7's to 100 (twins)and flat 16's down the 1/4 (stock carb) Lose a bit of mass with a 1200 and there you go! If you only want to race to 80, put a ute diff in. The 4 speed will only be a problem every 3rd race. . . But swapping them will get quicker with practice.

You are all scaring me with the derogatory remarks about the four speed. Am I going to have to do the painful search for a decent 5 speed???

if you use a flex capasitor dont you need to be doing 88mph before you go through time ?
Anyhow just build the thing & then go race them & find out for yourself.

The 56A is not really happy with the extra torque of the A15. The 60A's last a little longer. . .
I run an L series pressure plate which I believe could be a part of the problem. I found that the stock clutches don't handle a lot of power, slip under load when new. Of course a lot of this can be attributed to your driving style. Keep an eye out for a 63a or celica conversion. Or drive it like grandma. Once you get bearing noises, it is a good time to swap 'boxes. Throw a set of bearings in the noisy one and it is ready to go in again. Leave it in too long, and . . . You can view topic.
