heres the problem, my datto has been running a bit hot so i put in a radiator of C20 van and and changed the water pump of another motor (looked ok) but it still runs about over half and between the 'H'. there is a small amount of rust in the head but don't know if its that. how hot should it be running? Im lost for ideas.

All the 120ys and 1200s i've driven have always been sitting on dead on (or pretty much) halfway MAX or under. Over half is a prob, you could be losing water through the coroded head, rememember they are only old alloy. Might have a small hairline crack too around the rust... that's what happened to my 1200 a few years ago.. had to get it TIG'd up.

Just a suggestion, have you checked the thermostat?? It controls the temperature in your engine, so if you've changed everything else and it's still the same then it might be the cause....

You can buy hotter and colder thermostats also. Best to have colder ones in summer and hotter ones in winter..

Although the gauge up around the H is a real problem...I'm assuming you've checked for head gasket, and to see if it's losing lots of water??

If you have water entering into you're oil you'll know on you oil fill cap(milky appearance) and by the fact that water is just dissapearing and not onto the ground!!

This doesn't indicate a problem. The gauges can all be a little differently calibrated (more precisely, they are not calibrated). Most important is whether the temperature goes over this on some days and less on others. That would indicate a cooling problem. If it stays pretty steady when fully warmed, it's OK.

The thermostat will make a visible difference too. Use a 160 degree for best performance, 180 for best allround. With a 195 be prepared to retard the timing to stop pinging and use a high-pressure cap to avoid boiling since this is getting close to the boiling point.

Hmm.. My problem exactly.

As i wrote a couple of weeks ago, i to have an overheating prob. I have since replaced the thermostat, flushed engine out, filled with coolant and replaced spark plugs. I still left the same temp sender unit.

Start engine, let idle for 10 mins or so. Rev and engine temp soars past 100 degrees well up to 110-120. Switch engine off and wonder what the hell it is. The only thing left is the temp sender unit!! Or the gauge is faulty. Dunno. Dont care. Engine sounds sweet and i know its not over heating. I havent given it a floging!!

Damnit. Im broke. Cant even afford a temp sender unit at the moment :(

So Scotty, you don't have the cash for a temp sender but you can afford to modify radio controlled cars? (See his post "Electric Model Car" in the off topic section if you don't know what I'm talking about.)
No, I'm just kidding. We all have to blow our money on whatever keeps us sane.
I say, if the 1200 isn't overheating and you feel the need to play with the RC car, more power to you.

Hahaha. Yeah kinda contradictory huh!!

But obviously the 1200 is my first priority.

The RC is just somthing i've been playing around with and coming up with ideas to make it go harder. Im not intending to spend over 400 bucks on a speed controller , another 150 on batterys and chargers, 150 on another 13 turn X2 race engine, 150 on a romote controller, a receiver unit, new cogs, drive shaft and a shell very soon! As you can see, this is a side project that would be cool to have.

The Datsun on the other hand. Its so damn close!! Just the final parts are needed and those cost cash! And thats definatly better than standing on the steet playing with an RC.
