I was looking into it as well (rhd) and the only thing I can see being important is which side of the xmember it is mounted. You really want one that mounts on the firewall side of the xmember so you can keep the same rake on the steering column and all the rod ends on the rear of your lower arms.
I think a ke70 toyota starlet would be the best option but Im still looking.

Back to the 510, I think somebody even did an MR2.

Figure it this way, with all the modding being done on 510's, very few people have felt the need to change.

And with a relatively tiny amount of people owning 1200's let alone modding them, you may very well be the only one doing this in the U.S.

My only interest in this would be getting rid of the dratted LHD steering box.

Let us know when you're done, and ddgonzal can do a tech article out of it.

A Mustang 2 or Pinto rack will require a great deal of work. You will have to convert the car from rear-steer to front-steer.

If there is a way matbighat I will find it .And the reason is cause parts r very hard to come by in my parts .R&P r easier to come by here.

Regardless of what car a rack comes out off. What charactoristics decides whether a rack is made to steer from either in front or behind the crossmember?

I am in the process of covertering my 1200 to a r&p and looking for a gear out of a honda for the conversion.
benifits are lighter wieght, quicker steering response. better steering geometry

a rear steer car has the steering behind the frt wheels, a frt steer car has the steering in frt of the wheels. if you put in a frt steer r&p (pinto)
the car will turn the wrong way

Ok thats pretty straight forward when you stop to think about it.
Front steer has the pinion mounted behind (or under) the rack and the steering actually pushes the wheels in the desired direction. With rear steer it is all backwards.

Thinking about it more. Unless the pinion is mounted at rightangles to the rack, It would be impossible to dissassemble a rack and flip the pinion housing and have the pinion point the desired way.

So that definately rules out a front steer rack if the orginal rear facing steering arms were wanted to be left in position.

my car is severely lowered (2.5" ground clearance) and wider track with shortened steering arms when instaling a R&P I can mount it higher will be maching tie rod ends for proper lenght and modifying the rack I install to elimiate as much bump steer as possible.
may not be as practical for a street car
