Looks like I'm giving up the Barina and taking up full time Datsun driving.
With a little persuasion rallycar has agreed that I get his sexy little green coupe.

It's got an auto tunnel so I don't have to get manual lessons (score) so if we can find an auto box we'll convert it back to auto

Hopefully we're looking at putting in an a15 with cam, extractors, 32/36, elec dizzy...

Not that i care about any of that, as far as I'm concerned i'm happy if it has more bite than my barina.

Putting in a LOT more time on bodywork than rc's red coupe. Just because I can be bothered making things look good instead of investing all my time in POWER and SPEED

Should be fun!
Encouragement welcome
DG xx

maybe 1200rc should drive the auto, seeing he drives with no hands anyway....

congrats on the addition to the family, it might actually go quicker than the a15tt :).

contact me about the barina... i might have some one interested... seriously.

I was talking to a guy I know the other day and he told me he's got an A series auto box with a 2500 stall converter or something thereabouts that I could probly have. As the profile vaguely says I'm in Townsville so that presents it's own set of problems

p.s. 2500 stall converrter

Good on you DG & I agree with you about the body over the mechanicals. The real value of the car is the bodyshell, & a perfect body [like yours] with an ordinary engine will always be worth more than a junker with a hot engine, & besides, fitting a better spec driveline later on is a lot easier than fixing a crook body on a daily driver.

I personally recomend that you use a near stock A14 or A15 to begin with as the transmision uses the vacuum signal from the inlet manifold combined with road speed to calculate the shift speeds & shift harshness. If the engine has a bigger carb & a modified cam it reduces the manifold vacuum, which messes with the transmissions brain & screws up the shift speeds & shift harshness.

A stock, or near stock, A14/15 will provide a very peppy performance while still being a very nice car to drive, but the whole thing stops being fun when it won't shift right.
Reliability will be right up there with the best, & the cost right down in the weeds with a stocker too.

P.S. Please ask 1200RC to let me have the details that I asked for so that we can complete our little transaction.
Merry Xmas.

You go girl...well Dattogirl to be precise.

I'm sure you will find the Datto fun to drive and have a lot better feel of the road below you than you would in a Barina.

I actually rolled my Mum's 85 Barina only weeks after getting my P-plates way back in the very early 90's. I can tell you the Datsun 1200 will turn a lot better, brake better and probably accelerate better than the Barina.

See if you can get RC to work out how to get air conditioning in the thing and you'll have the perfect car.

Have a great new year,

my bit of encouragement would be to learn how to drive the manual box....

once you master it (and it wont take long)

you will never look back

good luck and keep us updated with its progress

If 1200RC fits an A15, or even an A14, half of the aircon problem is over as these engines were optionally fitted with an aircon compressor in some Sunny models. Once the right parts are sourced, it all just bolts right onto the engine.
Finding a suitable evaporator should not be hard & an aircon specialist chould be able to make it all work without a lot of effort.

A 1200 coupe with A15, auto & air,... now thats cool.

i feel you should learn manual as well, its not like 1200rc hasnt broken enough gearboxs for them to be scarce or anything
and its not like a 2nd hand one is expensive.

I think the auto will be fine though....especially with a good motor behind it.

does the auto really have any idea what speed it is doing?, and without looking back into it properly i cant remember any sort of connection to inlet vaccum to gearbox/gearbox related bits???
