Going to go buy an alternator tomorrow (Monday)
And then maybe get started putting it in Monday or Tuesday...

Also going to be attempting a respray of my car while my flatmate is away in queensland for 4 weeks, so I can use the whole carport. Gonna go from red faded 31 year old datsun paint to orange. It will be Ford Tango orange (Seen on Escorts, lasers, cortinas from the 70's) but everyone who asks will be told that it is a custom colour called "Crustacean Orange"

I worked too long today....

this may sound like a stupid question.. but what terminal on the coil do you put the ballast resistor before? ;)

The ballast resistor goes in series on the positive side of the coil!
It is used to reduce the 12V battery supply down to around 7V for the coil!

Hey there.

MY wrecker guy says that there were two types of alternators on EA falcons.

Anyone got any ideas of which one I need?

And have been quoted $50 for one. That is reasonable isn't it?

In my previous posts about wiring of the alternator I described 2 types. 1 with an RE60 regulator - this has an injector style plug connection on the reg! ( late model)
and an earlier model with an 005 regulator!
Either one will fit!

$50 sounds reasonable!
Just make sure you have warranty so you can take it to an Auto Electrician and get them to spin it up and check that it's Tip Top!
Other than that it sounds ok and you shouldn't have a drama!

One other thing is make sure it is the high amp alternator you are after!
It should say the amperage on the aluminium housing!
If you can't read it the easiest way to tell is by the stator! ( the stator is the round centre ring you can see inbetween the front and back housings! and the bigger this is the more amps the alternator is able to produce!)

50 buck is twice what i paid!
anyway, i know theres small diffences but they are all 75-85 amp, most seem to be 75 and the only one ive seen that was 85 is the one in my car
but yeah eithers good as was said
actually i reckon i could post you one of my spare for less than 50 but its prob not worth the effort, for what you get its worth spending $50 but you could probably get one cheaper if youre as tight as me

1200rallycar I understand you got yours for under $50 but you have to look at the different states in which you guys are in!
Melbourne versus Canberra NSW
Maybe in melbourne there were more taxis!
Or melbourne is where most of the old taxis are so they get all their wrecking cars from interstate!
Either way you basically pay for what it is worth to the area you are in!

hey if youre happy paying outrageous prices go ahead, and tell yourself whatever reason you like

but seriously just tell em someone elses price is lower or something or just offer em less most wreckers are flexible in price down here, no taxis where i got mine but i understand youre point

i reckon youd get one for less than $50 surely, while we are talking about diffrent prices in diffrent states, ic ant believe how much imports sell for in sydnet and equally cant believe how much cheaper they are in queensland, i was gonna go to queensland to buy a silvia from vic so surely most in nsw would go up there to buy em? turned out my parents couldnt affor to go garantor for the loan so i bought a datto to build a rally car as i earnt the money, probably a wise move in the end all my mates with 10-15k loans are really hating paying them off and they just bought stock dunnydores and falcons ect.

I dont think i read the post above 1200rc but re: what he said about taxi's. Surely wrecking yards on the mainland would be littered with old EA/EB taxi's. This would have to make them cheap.

By the way I dont think it just has to be a EA/EB alternator. I have a EB (1992) motor in my XB (1974) Falcon and the altenator in the original 6 cylinder XB was used on the EB mounting. So if you dont want the hassle of computer wiring the pre 1990 models were carby cars, maybe that might help. Come to mention it I have a spare XC (1978) model falcon 6cyl I might have to steal the altenator out of it and bolt in onto my Datto!
