now your bein a wanker,
you expect me to show you where you wrote that word for word.
its fairly obvious dont you think that thats what your saying?
as i said before, i dont care how you wanna talk yourself around it, it is bein dodgy, put youreself in this scenario-
you dont know nothin about an engine, you take your car to the mechanic and tell him your charge light is on.
he looks under the bonnet and sees the fan belt is loose.
the mechanic then turns to you and says 'the work required to fix this problem is a reco alternator'
not knowing a thing about engines, you say 'ok just fix it'
200dollars later you drive away when it could have been a handshake and a ' gee, thanks mate' thinking that next time something goes wrong with my car ill take it back there.
but instead the mechanic is tellin everyone how he talked a stupid customer into getting a new alternator when all was really wrong was a loose belt.
wouldnt you be unhappy to find out the mechanic duped you after you had paid for it. would you not think you had been done???
you cant tell me you'de say "gee whiz, that fellow just ripped me off, but oh well, i dont care its only money"
didnt think so
and also id would never let you work on my car, who knows what youll tell me whats wrong with it.

I like to take an even handed approach to everything I'm part of, so here I go.

Phunk is somewhat right, you all have lied in some way to make a gain. Everyone has lied at some point in their life. What he is saying with the offer of service is also technically correct in it is not illegal. The Dept of Fair Trading wouldn't even investigate this claim.

Where he is wrong is trying to defend something that is ethically wrong. Law isn't ethical and vice versa. Claiming something is right because it doesn't break a law is a half truth.

As an academic in this field I do not agree with his defence of these tactics, but legally the practice cannot be stopped.

P.S - Phunk man, you shouldn't argue the point, just let everyone have their say and move on. Unfortunately sticking up for yourself looks like an admission of guilt to the masses.

Maybe you are right. But I wont sit and read people write that I said something I didnt. This is what Pepper has done.
Reguardless of word for word or not. I never once said I would tell a customer a incorrect cause was the problem. I have never said or even hinted in this forum that I would say unrequired work would fix a problem. I really dont need to repeat what I actually said or even hinted. Its right there in previous posts for all to read.
Pepper If you feel I said or hinted, please show where. Bring it to my attention. Your last post are utter bull. Like I said " Maybe learn to read"
If you gonna say ####, make sure its correct and truthful. I do not tell lies. If I worked on your car I would tell you whats wrong if you asked. If I say " we sell diesel for $1.20 a litre" and you say ok fill me up with $10 worth. Is it my problem that your car actually runs on petrol. You told me to fill it up.
And if a mechanic told me blah blah is wrong and blah blah will fix it. Yeah I probably would say fix it as I know nothing and simply need my car. If he has bullshitted to me, then he is a conman shonk and has broken the law. Plain and simple.

I have in the past and if I ever work in a workshop in the future, I probably will still perform unrequired work, but my work will still be quality. Like it or hate it. If your car doesnt charge the battery and its just a loose fan belt. I would consult you and quote you for an alternator overhaul. If you agree I would overhaul it like new and fit a new fan belt. I would even tell you your belt was on its way out and I replaced it for free. Your happy, I made a job out of nothing and still did the quality work I charged you for. Same goes for startermotors and starter relays.

right there.

seeing as though you want to make a point of it, i can read, just like yourself probably can. didnt we grow out of insults like that back in year 10.
goodness look what I have done!!!!!

I'm sure you are right. Everyone lies by omission to make a few a few bucks. I wonder, does this include:

Your accountant,
Your butcher,
Your doctor,
Your dentist,
Your phone company,
Your internet provider,

The list goes on. Think about how you feel about these people applying your principles. It's scary.

Ok I am a man I have said "I would consult you and quote you for a rebuilt alt". That indeed does sound like I am saying its the problem. My bad.
Clearly in my other posts I have said I would say " I would tell you I charge XXX for a rebuilt alt "
Clearly both are different and one does indeed look like I am telling you its the problem.
Whats your address? I hope your grass is atleast regularly hosed down.

Vex You are right it is scary. My point it is very easily done and there are more out there doing it far worse than me and very blatantly. The car industry is ####ed and hard to make a dollar when competing with competition quotes. Like I said I am no longer in the car trade. Everyone can rest so much easily now. Atleast untill the day I might go back into it Then look out for big bad Steve.

Like a convo I had with a psychologist. I'm very sceptical of doctors prescribing Ritalin and other anti-depressants to any kid that might be a little bit of a prick. She agreed with me, saying its scary how most docs hand 'em out like they were candy.

Props to phunk for standing up and admitting he may have been wrong.
