I too am wondering about Conversions for datsun 1200's.
What would be the advantage of going for a CA18 N/A over a 4age? The reason i say this is because i dont want a turbo or supercharger, and a 4AGE is like alot cheaper here in NZ. Are they hard to fit into a 1200 coupe? Also toyota 5 speeds are cheaper here, and there are more tuning bits around for 4AGEs.
cheers, Volod

I'd like one of 2 of those cheap 5 speeds too.
I looked for one for 2 yrs before I bought my celica conversion and couldn't find a single one.
So if you find them pass the info around.

well I know a guy who has a close ratio 1:1 5 speed right now that I would be prepared to share with the list! I dont need it because I need the overdrive.

the reason I need the overdrive is because my car tops out at about 140 revving its box off where I know it has more with the 1500.
right now I'm probably no better for top end than with the original 1000cc .. I know the 12" rims and 4.11 diff ratio will contribute but a 5th cog would really be nice for relaxed cruising.

he said he'll take 300 for it and I had a good talk to him and he doesnt sound like a hoon. he fits them to morris minors. he has the overdrive one in his which he uses for interstate trips. he said it has been sitting for about 5 years, but that shouldnt matter with a gearbox surely?

you could swap the diff centre for a 1200 coupe one which is a 3.9:1 ratio. Not a lot of difference but it helps. It is a straight swap as the centers are the same except for the ratio.
Oh yeah, you can't use 1200 axles, their too long, but you probly already knew that.

Don't forget that with anything bigger than an A15 you need a stronger differential.

Using the original 1200 diff is OK with an A14, but with an A15 it is borderline. If you have a A15 w/5-speed (taller first gear), the 1200 diff will live.

The main advantage is that the CA engine is a Nissan product. On the other hand the Toyota motor has more power, fits into a 1200 more easily and has an excellent (and available) 5-speed.

If you are going to use the original 1200 4-speed, don't think about an A15 unless you plan to drive it very carefully, as an A15 can easily break the small transmission.

Speaking of transmissions....I'm about to put in an a15 and am worried about the trans and rearend. I don't mean to split up the topic but it is late and I have been trying to get a handle on the gearbox game. I have a 79 or 80 210 wagon with a normal pattern five speed. I'm still not sure what is usable off this vehicle for my 1200. I want the overdrive if I don't loose to much launch power with 1st gear.Any help with mods for US versions would be greatly appreciated. As for skill level, I'm a professional auto technican but we fix things more than we fabricate around here. I need projects that can leave the shop before monday comes around.

if the 210 has an a series motor the box will fit, youll need to make up a rear crossmember for the gearbox though, there are several ways to do this but its best to put the box in and see what looks like itll work best, if the diff in your 210 wagon is a h165 i think it will be perfect for your 1200 as they are the same width but youll need to get a tailshaft made up (hard to identify h165 but basically if the cetre comes out of the front of the diff, not the back, and it is about 8 inches tall in the centre id be pretty sure it is a h165)
