#11 Re: What shock absorbers do you racers use?

I run Koni Yellows in the front and Reds in the back. The Yellows have the adjustment on top of the strut which is very handy and the Reds adjustment has already been explained. I've actually set my rears to full soft after a bit of mucking around and never touch them whereas the fronts I play with a bit trying different things out.

As has been said above, if the car is for road use only I would be getting a set of good quality non adjustable shocks.

1200GXman

If the setup is the same as the 1400bakkie then u can use gas riders. I got a quote down here in durban and it comes to R1000 for all 4 gas riders supplied and fitted.

Thanks man.
The sedan uses a different setup at the back. That is whats worrying me about gas shocks availability.

The front I am going to upgrade to 1400 bakkie front because my GX discs are too thin and discs are not available anymore.
While doing this upgrade I am also going to do a crossdrill job on the discs.

Some very good advice given in here . Here's a question , right now my 120y coupe has later model stanza strauts with king springs lowered and standard shocks. I have a feeling that if I don't get the back matched I'm going to have a real weapon and I don't mean in the good way . What shocks should I fit to the back to even things up? bear in mind it's still an A series and slighty lighter as I have no use for passanger seated and trim.

I would feel fine about the Monroe/Gabriel dampers. On our coupe the only time you ever noticed the Munroes were street shocks was in turn 1 which was about a 135 KPH or so corner with a big dip followed by a bump , while drifting though there the car would dance around a bit. Nothing alarming but noticeable......this isn't gonna happen in street car on street tires.

Littledarkone , the problem you are likely to have with lowered springs in the back is the piston in the damper/shock will not be riding in the area it's supposed I.E. the longer shock with lowered car will compressed , this can cuase problems. Easy solution is to find a shock that matched the spring rate and ride height.....check some parts books or hunt e-bay for some of those Koni reds.
Also I know the cheapo KYB's get bashed in some circles but I used them on a little Civic wagon we had and they made the car decent to drive were it was mush and wheel chatter before.

I'm not really a racer yet ;)
I have koni specials ( the red/orange ones - adjustable ) In the rear, set to firm with the pedders sportryder lowering springs and it's nice and firm, maybe too firm, but I like knowing that the back end will step out if i want it to.

I have koni specials for the front too, but they won't work in the 280zx struts so they are for sale, supposedly from a 200sz/gazelle, but they are the kind you have to take apart to adjust. The front will have the tokico 5 pos adjustable ones for the 280zx which are adjustable on the car.

KYB's even the stock ones are better than globriel and mushroe.

I have those 200sx koni's for sale and a set of front inserts for a B11.
both are NOS - never used.

My 120y is used for the dirt, and in the rear I am using stock leafes with double acting oil shocks from the rear of a VY commodore, and on the front I will be using stanza struts with 120y springs and the oil shocks filled with 20w50 engine oil, nice an firm with a fair bit of travel which is great for high speed dirt stuff.
