Yes. Several guys in New Zealand have done it.

You can put any kind of transmission behind it using traditional swap techniques (some trans would need a simple aluminum plate, others require more work). The easiest swap would be the A-series transmissions since they are almost identical to E-series bellhousing pattern, but not quite).

id go a pulsar q motor an 1987-88 there a 1.8 fuel injected and they go like a bat out of hell. Honestly if you where to go a fwd converstion i think this would be more worth while but the et pulsars were great i was reading a artical in fast fours and pro-tek have a pulsar mild upgrades in the way of ARP head stud, mild-grind camshaft and oversized valves (a few other things in detail) with a gt30 turbo at 25psi and puts out 230kw atw
