Hi Guys.
Just an update to my problem I had.
Those of you who forgot about my 1200GX that runs hot on the highway forum please run a search on it and you will find my previous post in the archives.Sorry....

I installed a genuine Nissan termostat.
My old one was faulty.
When pressing to open the termo it got stuck halfway and when you press just a little harder it would then fully open.

I ran it this weekend on the highway at a constant 110 km/h.
When reaching a hill it would rise to exactly the halfway mark.
when going downhill it would go down to a milimeter just beneath the middle mark or stay on the middle mark.
It was about 31 degrees celcius.
What is your comment on it guys?
Must I still replace the radiator or are you experiencing the same?
I am thinking of doing this test again but at 120 to 130km/h.
When it goes to 2/3 I will slow down to 110km/h and see if it goes down on temp.
Maybe also do a temp test when it reaches this high temp to get the genuine temp of the radiator water.Maybe my gauge is faulty or the temp sensor.
If this is not too serious I will replace the radiator later as it stays at 1/3 in town where I drive most of the time.

I would however like to drive on the highway.
You all know how fun it is to drive a datsun just for a weekend cruise somewhere to a small nearby town to get away from all the work and stress...

It sounds as though your radiator could do with a good clean, if you didn't want to pay for it to be done, a cheaper alternative, although not quite as effective as a professional job, is to partially fill the radiator with water and blow compressed air into the bottom tank (several times). This forces the water up the cooling tubes and dislodges most of the build up in the core.
But if you do have the money, I do recommend a professional clean.

You can get thermostats that range in temps. eg some will open at 75deg and others will open at 85degs etc. from memory i have one which opens at 82degs and after 8 laps it just starting to creep up a bit. maby you want to find one which opens up earlier and keeps the motor cooler.

I don't have a picture of the 1200 temp guage, so i will assume that the "halfway mark" & the "middle mark" are the same one.

If this is true, then you are saying that the temp rises to the central part of the guage, & stays within that middle area. This is where it is supposed to be. A small change due to load & speed is normal, as long as it stays in the middle of the range.

If this is what is happening, then your radiator is doing it's job & you have no problems. That was a cheap fix, wasn't it.

Dodgeman.
Sorry about the stupid wordings that I am using.
Halfway is middle.

Thanks for all of your comments everybody.
I presume it must then be fine if it stays exactly in the middle of the temp gauge and vary only little when road conditions change.
I will however test it at 120km/h or more.
I have an idea it will run hotter when I am going to increase my speed.
Only testing will tell.
But I must admit I did make progress cheap so far.I will however not be able to drive fast but that is ok.
I enjoy just cruising in my datsun.
Thanks Dodgeman.

Quinn.
To reply to your post.
It is a 74 degrees celcius that I have bought.

It sounds normal to me ... the temp on mine drops a little under certain conditions.

My previous 1200 would get hotter on hot days, but a little bit larger radiator took care of that.

For what it is worth my 1200 ran hot on at highway speeds before we installed a 3 core radiator. The boiling point , so to speak , seemed to be 4200 RPMs. At my SCCA driving school I had to run the heater to keep the temp down - it was 106 degrees out.
We first used a B210 radiator which helped some but a few laps from the end I would put the heater on. The three core radiator solved all of this , even with the 7800 RPM redline the temp barely goes above half.

Do not appologise to me for your writing. If i could write, & speak, another language, even half as well as you write in my language, i would regard myself as very clever.
You write, & spell, in the English language far better than many of the Australian correspondents on this site. They seem to have been asleep in class when they were at school.
Be proud that you are bi-lingual, i wish i was.

Hi Guys/Girls

Just a newer update on my overheating problem. I did another run a few weeks back on the highway as it currently is summer here and very hot. It ran hot again going to 2/3 on the guage.
As can be seen in my updated signature, I installed a tripple core radiator about 2 weeks ago.
The twin core one that was removed was AGAIN dirty. Can you believe it.
When I got the tripple core, I flushed it with water to make sure the radiator guys did'nt make it dirty. Some white coloured water came out.
I installed it and poured only water into it.
Idled the car until thermostat opened and left it to cool down again.
Drained the radiator and poured the right amount of water and coolant in.
Gave it a go yesterday.
It lies juuuuust underneath the middle mark of the temp guage.
When I get to a uphill it starts to rise to precisely centre on the guage and when I go downhill on the other side it goes back again juuuust under the centre line.
At the end of the run it was precisely in the middle of the guage.
Do you think this is ok if it lies in the centre of the temp guage?
I think it is fine.
I also checked the coolant.
Everything still same level.

Thanks again for all the help.

Exactly right. This is to be expected and very good.
