is it a coupe? I removed the boot seal and havent got a new one yet and i have the same problem. either replace or fix the seal and/or tighten the boot lid. the areo-dynamics of the car will actually suck air back in through the boot.
should help.

You have raw fuel leaking into the atmosphere somewhere, or the fuel vapours are escaping from the tank. If it occurs only when driving, then there is a good possibility that you have fuel leaking from a fuel line, after the pump. [The pressure side]

Run the engine at idle while you have a good look under the bonnet in good daylight, or with a good torch. You are looking for wetness on a fuel line, or fuel hose. Any fuel leaking out into a hot engine bay turns to vapour which makes it's way into your cabin area. Don't even think about the fireball if it catches fire while you are driving.

I have the same problem with my 1200 GX sedan.
Mine is however doing the following:
When I fill her up at the gas station, they cannot do it at "full speed" with the pump.
They must do it very slowly otherwise it will "spit" fuel out of the filler pipe where you put the line in to fill her up.
Basically a airlock. So I tell them everytime to do it slowly.
This is however not the problem.
When my fuel tank is either half filled or more
it smells when ONLY turning to the left on a road. On 90 degree left turns or left turns that is taken faster than normal.
I think it is spilling fuel out somewhere at the fuel tank.

I rather enjoy it.
Makes me forget about the problems at work when driving home in the afternoon

Newer petrol pumps pump more fuel than the old cars can cope with. This is Normal.

If you have blocked fuel breathers, then this won't help. I dont know what the coupe ones look like, but on the sedan the breather is rarely in good working order.

In Australia in all but a handful of service stations..they are all "self-service".

Get a new fuel cap, and check your fuel tank breather pipes.

Alternatively don't fill/overfill your fuel tank.

Chris

ps. fuel smells are dangerous as an explosion risk, and as a poisoning risk. It's not funny, and should be fixed as soon as possible.
Dare I say that EFI is the answer.

On my old 1200 sedan I had the same problem as 1200GXman. I found that the problem was the rubber hose that joins the filler neck to the tank had a split in it.Not a big split but still big enough to splash a little fuel into the boot and fill the cabin with the smell of fuel.

Yes, make sure there are no leaks in the system.

Also consider this. Fumes can come from the exhaust pipe, especially if your carbs are running rich. To solve this problem:
1. Tune the carbs
2. Add an extension to the tailpipe. You can either run a pipe about four inches past the bumper, or have it turn and exit about an inch past the side of the car.
Don't laugh ... this goes a long way to prevent exhaust fumes from coming in the windows while the car is stopped at lights and stop signs.

Get it on a dyno, get an A/F ratio check and look at the engine bay while things are going, the carbies could be leaking...this is why rebuild kits exist. Replace the hoses and clips for your fuel system.

Does closing the air vent help? have you checked all of the firewall grommets, do they seal properly?

Does the fuel tank make a Pssshhhh noise when you go to fill up? If it does, this is your problem. FIX your tank ventilation system. Some people pull the venitlation off and throw it away. They then block the breather pipe. This breather should ONLY vent to outside of the car.

Basically start doing some debugging.

If it's fuel smell it's either:
1. a fuel leak,
2. poorly tuned/broken carbies
3. rich mixture causing exhaust fumes, which are coming back in because of a worn out boot seal.
4. ineffective fuel tank breather system
5. the clips that hold the fuel hoses on are generally low pressure, these tend to leak after 5 years or so.

So get to looking at these things. If it still does it, put it in the "too hard basket" and sell it. Buy another 1200 that doesn't have the problem. IF you don't sell at (and don't fix it), you'll just get more and more angry at the car.

Chris
