Sounds like the needle and seat in the carby is buggered. The float level gets too high and it floods. Causing horribly rich mixture making it stall. Does it make "lumpy cam" noises before it stalls, or simply run out of fuel? Maybe the fuel pump is buggered it it just quietly dies.

If it only happens at idle, then it can only be fuel, checked your fuel filters? That could also be that. And if you say the pump is ok, then the filters it is. Normally though, this would also mean problems under all engine loads.

Mabe Datsun were smart and its a deliberate function that stops you cooking your motor by leaving it idle for 10 mins.

I doubt if Datsun tested the engine just idling for 10 minutes ... I wouldn't expect mine to idle for long periods of time.

If the engine is cold, yeah it does that.
If the engine is warm, it's not "supposed" to die, but it might due to engine-compartment temperatures, fuel-recovery emissions system or other reasons.

I'm surprised that "feature" isn't a smog requirment on all the cars here in California. Sounds like it does a good job of reducing idle emissions.

One problem I had with my car was that when I stoped and had it out of gear it stalled, which was due to the clutch engaging. Had several problems with the carb and such too.

I think someone told me that my torque converter is not disengaging properly when starting thats why it makes a loud pitchy cranking like noise when starting.
