SR, I believe. thats why they cost more.

The SR is better for aftermarket parts.
The CA is lighter, better technical design.

Either can make good power.

Only the CA18DET can be registered legally in most Australian States in a 1200.

More than 140kW at the wheels is enough for a street driven 1200. More than 200kW is dangerous even at the drags.

Remember, the 1200 had 69HP at the engine, after conversion and 25% drivetrain loss, it had a little under 39kW at the wheels.

Do you really expect the chassis strength was over engineered by 500% ??

i always like thew ca18... oil jets for the under pistons and also the engine is beether in lighter applications with its more complete head design.
sr20 unless fitted with the gtir head have a tendancy to break rocker arms one even mildly moded and reved a lot.
ca18 also as stated lighter and more compact.
if i had the chance and the money, rb20 or 25 would be the go, these engine are stronger than bothe th eca and sr put together. the datsun just does not have the space of the correct fron tto rear weighting for such a conversion though

i remember reading an article in HOT4S about this once....both are good engines, but the CA has a rocker setup which will withstand higher revs than the SR will

I cant remember what the two different setups were called...one is "bucket and shim" (i think) but stuffed if i can remember what the other type is called

Before we can come up with a truly definitive response, we really need to know what YOUR definition of "BETTER" really is.

What do you seek from these engines?

I think the SR engines are superior than the CA
well you can get a lot more power than the CA
bigger, stronger engine
its got timing chain instead of the belt
you'll probably get more aftermarket bolt-ons

How much money do you want to throw away? That is the real ??? I rode in amates ca powered racecar, and I was scared! But personally if I had that kind of dough to waste, I would build an fj20 instead. TSillay's mate has one in a silvia that runs 10s, and he said that the motor only cost around 8Gs to build. But Im poor , so Im an a boy.

SR20DET... the cost is not much more, and it is only like 50 lbs heavy'r ...but all in all more hp, .... BUT DO NOT get me wrong the ca18 and sr, and fj, are all swaps i wish i had in my datsuns... man,,, i would give my left nut for any one of those to magically be put into my datsuns.. .... ...

1 Dont want a FJ20 cos they are to heavy.
2 "better"....... I want as much grunt as I can get as my 1200 will have a cage and is going to be used as a club/rally car for full fun sideways action
3 Money away..... mate if I can get this ca/sr as cheep as my wrecker said then I will not be throwing money away
4 500%????? dont get it?
