Well, I have been in Canberra for 4 months and finally got pulled over by police about 200 meters from home.

Apparently some losers were cutting burnouts up and down the street about 20 minutes before I came home from work. I get pulled over 5.00pm friday afternoon- DEFECT.

Reason: "supercharger fitted". That was it, nothin more, nothin less.

Coppers stink here in ACT/NSW- they don't even know the bloody law...

A quiet weekend for me

Isn't your supercharger legal?

If your S/C is engineered, keep a copy of the report / certificate in your glovebox...then no one can argue that its not legal

Mick, my sincerest and most heartfelt condolences for this most terrible atrocity to befall you.
As my s/c will stick 41/2 to 5 inches out the bonet ,I too may suffer the same injustices once I get the dam thing going.
But still, this raises a point for me, Really, why should s/c or indeed turbos need certing? Its not like just fitting a blower to an otherwise lagal car will make it weigh more , or make the chasis fail. The speed limit is still the same. Certing in NZ is from what I can gather, a lot mellower in nz. But hey, its only cheating if you get caught, and no doubt Ill probably be posting the exact same thing as you in the not too distant future myself.
Bad luck mate.

Thanks a14force, I am certain similar transactions will occur for you, once your beast is on the road.

I have just had a read of the rta website (nsw registration authority) and have discovered that the dirty bloody copper really didn't know his stuff. There are a whole heap of rules, regulations, tables and theorems that clearly states what engines and gearbox's we can use to modify our beloved datsuns. Firstly a supercharger does not breach any of the rules as far as 'owner modifications' power outputs go and secondly (and this is the big one) right down the bottom of the document it clearly states:

"The above tables DO NOT apply to 4wds, light trucks or commercial vehicles"

My little ute is registered as a light truck!!

Nyar, nyarny, nyar, nyar to the NSW POLICE. HA HA - I WIN!!!
YA BASTARDS!

A supercharger does affect the emmisions. I would think that your Ute is a 1973+ model, and therefore must confirm to the stricter emmisions laws.

But you are right, that theres nothing online that explains it. I find it very strange that none of the online Supercharger people discuss the registration legality in regards to the fitment of Superchargers. I'm pretty sure you'd still need an engineers cert for this mod.

Otherwise people would put the DE versions of engines into their cars and fit a turbo or supercharger later on.

Being a "light truck" may make the difference here. But you'd be best to call the RTA, or a supercharger mob. Tell them you want to buy one of their superchargers for your A-series, and was wondering about the legal implications..They'd probably tell you what's up.

Cheers,
Chris
