So, unknowing Dattodevil, the Datsun "division" of Nissan, made Datsun cars, like the Holden "division" of General Motors make Holden. [I do not know what percentage of Nissan is owned by Renault.] But you knew that, & had to be a smart-arse anyway. So, what's your point? The word "ute" has evolved in exactly the same way as the word "sedan", or "coupe" The ability to grasp that has devolved in the minds of some users. Unfamilia You are probably right about the Suzuki, but for the life of me, i can't think what they were called. {edit} PDS. Thanks for the Suzuki info. It's obvious that the willing supression of intelligence, & the eagerness to belittle Australias only contribution to the Automotive design scene have pressed my buttons, & will continue to do so. That many are unaware of the rich history of ute's is unfortunate, that many of these people actively wish to remain ignorant, when knowledge is readily available, apalls me. This is what i mean by "aquired ignorance" It's amazing that no one would dare to call a coupe, a sedan, or other popular body design by a wrongfull name, but an entire, & rich category of vehicle types is conveniently lumped together under a single, easy to spell name, because many are either too lazy, or too stupid, to get it right. A ute is a ute in it's own right, & all the bluster, & all the "opinion" that can be raised in opposition to that fact will not change this one simple truth, ... no matter what.

The Suzuki Swift that is refered to is a Mighty Boy It fits the desrciption of a ute down to the very last point. At the end of the day the event that is planed is about getting together to have fun, Thats kinda like what being Australian is about isnt it?

Mate, Now I know that your opinion(got the right spelling now LOL) matters to you and like wise my opinion matters to me, I do feel that you are trying to force your opinion on to others. But come on now, its just a ute, just like its just a coupe or a sedan or a wagon. They are all have motors and we all love'm. I value your opinion and I know others do on this site, also I see that this topic has got your goat up, which I can understand, but please dont belittle others thats just not friendly. I am not trying belittle Australian's as I dont think that other's are trying to do that either.

Quote: This was mean't as a compliment otherwise I would Have said most knowing dodgeman, but you probably would have taken offence to that too. I am amazed at the amount of time you spend on homework and the knowledge that you hold, I wish I had the inclination or incentive to do the same. I was just wondering your stance on my previous question, I know a bit off topic but Still it regards "definition". I apoligise if offence was taken.

dattodevil Your appology is accepted, & i, in turn also extend my appology to you for having taken offense un-necessarily. You unhappily got me when i was just a bit "testy." I'm sorry.
I have spent all my life trying to learn ever more & more about my favorite subjects, & it goes deeply against my grain to see the progressive dumbing down of the world around me. People who can't spell even the simplest words, or add up 2+3, just because they don't want to, leave me cold.
People who express opinions that are just made up conveniences, & not based on any real level of knowledge of their subject, & who then expect me to respect that opinion, will be sadly dissapointed.
Well reasoned, & well researched opinions are always eagerly sought out by me, even if they ultimately prove to be wrong. Hell, i have got it wrong heaps of times, but the thinkers are worth their weight in blue mouldy cat sh## & i love 'em, even if a clash of personalities sometimes distracts from the subject[s].
As a serious automotive enthusiast i see this dumbing down at it's worst in this ute debate, & it quite obviously gets right up my nose. There must be at least a dozen categories of open back commercial vehicles out there, each with it's own name or description, & to see them all summed up as utes, because of ignorance or laziness just lights my fuse. This is a mistake that Hot Rodders dare not make as several categories of these commercials were available on the same chassis, at the same time. [Model A's were available as both ute's & pickups] No room for blunders here.
To dazzasute I appologise to you also for the level, or intensity, of my tirade, but the logic in your post proved to be a red rag to a bull, & the last line was the metaphoric cattle prod that set things in motion. I ask only that when you offer up an opinion on a subject, that you try to perhaps do just a little homework first. We all get it wrong from time to time, but i just couldn't let that one pass. Sorry.

So in a word, what would classify all these types of vehicles that had shown up at the event, besides utility?

I don't know about a single word, but collectively, they are all "commercial vehicles" [two words], in the same way that sedans, coupes, convertibles, roadsters, tourers, et, al. are all "passenger cars"[also two words] Each one of these diferent passenger car designs has it's own identity, which no one seems to question. So why do we have so much trouble applying the same standard of individual identity when it comes to commercials? Thats the part i have never understood. The double standard.
P.S. At various times, those commercials that are directly based on a passenger car model, like our Datsun utes & vans, have been described as being "commercial car" models.

good to see we're all coming out of this o.k. sorry if i offended anyone. i figured that if anyone would know more on this topic it would be the organizers, so i posted what they sent me. If you don't agree with it, maybe you can at least accept it as what the organizers would define as a "ute". You must admit, if they did agree with dodgeman, calling the event "dog in a ute, trayback, pick up, flat bed, or whatever else you have that isn't a semi, sedan, or coupe" would start to sound... at least odd.

I dont think that its a double standard, just a different view from different people. So would you say a 4 wheel drive is the same as any other 4 wheel drive??? I am looking forward to the answer to this one!! Cheers Blair
