Stock Surge Tank?!!!

Hey guys, I was working on the 1200 coupe today trying to figure out exactly how I'm going to run my fuel system for the SR20det and something dawned on me.

What do you think of using/converting the vaccuum canister/fuel evaporator tank in the back right hand side of the car as a surge tank instead? It's already in a perfect stock location! Plus it won't be needed as a fuel evaporator tank anymore with the SR20 engine. In fact, it was as I was removing it to get rid of it that the idea came to me.

I would run a low pressure high volume fuel pump to supply the fuel from the tank into the surge tank, and then run a high pressure externally mounted EFI pump after the surge tank. The only problem I can think of is the LARGE capacity of this tank. I would say just by guessing this thing would hold about 3-4 liters of gas. Since it's so big, I would run two feeder lines from either end of it on the bottom so as to never run dry in hard launches or lots of turns.

I already bought an aftermarket surge tank that I was going to use that's only about 1 Liter, but I'd have to drill holes, build a bracket, and it wouldn't fit as well as that stock can does!

I really think I'm going to give it a shot. I'm going to have some larger fuel lines welded into it as 1/4" is way too small for the SR20.

I don't think Japanese or Australian model 1200's came with this type of emissions equipment, so I'm thinking many of you have no idea what I'm talking about, but this is the large black canister inside the plastic interior cover in the right rear side of the coupe. Here are some pictures...tell me if you think this is a good or a bad idea and why.

Who would've thought the 1200 came stock with a 4 liter surge tank?!!

Looks reasonable to me, remember you have the following input/outputs lines:
Bottom of the tank
1. low pressure from main tank
2. Line to EFI pump
Top of the tank
3. Return line from engine
4. Return line back to fuel tank.

I've never seen one of these before, certainly not on a 1200.

The sideways "swishing" of the petrol in the tank is why people make their tanks narrow, and mount them vertically. You may need to baffle that tank though. 1 litre is plenty, if it's not enough, get a second low pressure pump to increase the flow to the surgetank. With fuel surgetanks..bigger is not better.

Just Wondering?
My 78 1200 ute has the same looking thing next to fuel cap under the quater panel which i only came across after removing old quaters!

Would this be the same as the one in question?

If so would i benefit with the same concept for super charged A15?

CHEERS MICKER!
