i have a mate who thinks hes top #### and that no 1200 will beat his escort. its a mk 2 two litre, worked, injection ect, has 100 rwkw. ive seen it run dead even with a standard auto 5litre vp commy. ive just bought an a15 but no 2,3,4 cyl have had water get in them rusting rings to bores. so i will need to re-bore plus new pistons, rings, bearings etc. would an a15 with big cam, compression, 32/36 webber and extractors/ exhaust, possibly big overbore have a chance at beatin it or do i need boost. i no id flog him boosted but need ur opinions so i no wat pistons to start thinkin about etc. will be usin stock 120y box, open wheeler h150 borg warner diff, good clutch etc. wat do u think

Induction is your main problem with the package you are considering. You'll need twin side drafts or injection to get close to him in rwkw stats. You have the weight advantage and provided you got to around 90 rwkw you'd give him a good run. A standard 3.9 open diff and a Datto box ratio isn't going to give you a jump off the line either. Well sorted Escorts are pretty impressive race cars but not unbeatable.

Escorts arent capable of over 160hp with their cast iron crossflow head. However to beat it all you need is 80rwkws and locked diff or al cheapo phamtom grip copy like 1200rc. My ex a15 with quad carbs (mikuni bike carbs), gx head (untouched) but performance cam (came alive at 3500 to 7000), cheapo extractors, re-curved dizzy did 74rwkws and beat many 5 litre commonwhores and other more exotic machinery. My carbs were 36mm 600cc suzuki ones too which were small compared to fj1200 ones like dodgeys apprentice or workshop friend. A good way to lighten a 1200 is rip out what you dont need and leave the vitals. Ive come to learn that datsun 1000 coupes can lose about 15kg with the dash and gauges alone!!! As for my 1000 2 door sedan came standard with 625kgs from factory. Ive heard of some 1200s weigh in at 660kgs which is better than a ute.

my old A15 i had in my coupe (Muke now owns it) it could beat VP commys, the work I had sone was overbore to 79mm (making it a little over 1600cc), I used TX3 pistons (flat top's), shaved and match ported head, twin 40mm webbers, huge cam (never quite knew the specs of it) 4-1 extractors and a 2" mandrel bent exhaust.
Tranny was a Celica 5 speed.
So yeah you could beat him with a done up engine, but in the long run force feeding it may prove cheeper.
Cheers Damo

In what way do you want to "beat" the escort"? 0-100kph accleration? Money spent? road-racing lap times?
Let's be honest: A 1200 with a stock A15 accelerates slowly. It feels fast but it's not. If you build up the A15 to the level that the escort engine is built, you should be able to keep up in straight-line acceleration. But if you are talking about top-speed or track times that's a whole 'nother story.

Yes dont forget compression my head was shaved at and angle to face the valves as parallel as possible to the pistons (I think thats what they did) and also took out lotsa meat of it and cleared the pushrod holes so they wouldnt touch at the new geometry. I dont know the specs cause they were hush on it but one such engine is datto1000 from perth built by the same mob. Mammi motors.

i just want to beat him from standstill to about a hundred in acceleration. dont care about top speed, anything over a hundred starts to get scetchy in my datto coz its hell stiff and very bumpy especially on crap roads. so if i was to use a delco ecu and some injection etc and a big cam, big compression and maybe some headwork i could be in with a chance at givin him a run. hmmm 80 rwkw sounds like a lot for a normally aspirated a15. maybe i should just boost it but dont want to blow bulk money on this setup as doing ca conversion one of these days wen i have the time and money. not for a while but.
