#1 Crank pulley coming off
Reeves Posted on: 2004/7/12 7:24
Hi guys.

I own a 1200 delux and a skyline,
My problem is with the SKyline this time.

Well, mines is the the Skyline GTX, only assembled with the L28 motor, exactly like the Z cars, here in South Africa.
None of the guys on the Skyline sites can assist due to this.

Well you see, I have had the crank pulley come of twice thus far.
This time time it has come off, and half the bolt broke into the crank. This is no problem though.

My problem is that how can I stop the pulley coming off this often.
I beleive this is a common problem with the L28e motors.

I have previously, put on lot of Loctight on, purchased key ways from Nissan, however, same problem.
Do I probably have to have the pulley balanced before putting it on this time?
Any suggestions welcome.

Help Datnissan Guys

Try an harmonic balancer. In Australia the early 80s R30 Skylines with the L24E (fuel injected) motor had harmonic balancers. You might have to do a bit of research at the local wreckers to see if any L series Datsuns in SA had them I guess.

I had a similar problem with my a15 race motor. I don't tighten as much now and that seems to work.

The CA18DET front pulley needs to be tightened to a massive 105 foot pounds.

It was off the scale on my rather big torque wrench.

My front pulley has copper coat on it, so It's not to do with having enough loctite. How tight are you doing up the L28E one?

Well, the l28e pulley doesnt have a copper coat etc.
I havnt had specs as to what torque settings needed, to be tightend.
However I'm sure, it was tight enough, cause the last time, I had the half the bolt broken off into the crank.
Any idea as to what torque settings to use.

Thanks dude

The crank pulley bolt on my A12 kept coming loose and almost fell out. I drilled and safety wired it so at least it would not loosen up completely and fall out.
It has since never come loose.

Front Pulley=
94 to 108 foot pounds.

Maybe the "copper coat" is what allows you to get the bolt undone when you need it.

In case you don't know, copper coat is a copper filled lubricant for bolts that live in high torque or high temp environments like head bolts etc.

My guess is that it's failing because the bolt wasn't properly tightened: Too loose and it could back out by vibration. Too tight, and it could break.

Borrow or rent a torque wrench. Or buy an inexpensive pointer-type wrench.

Clymer's give the specs as:
A12 109-116 ft-lb (15-16 Mkg)
A13, A14 109-145 ft-lb (15-20 Mkg)
