Speedo Cable Question

My speedo is not working and haven't change or fixed a speedo before...
I unscrewed the cable from the back of the speedometer to check if its connected right, but not really sure if the cable just slides in the hole of the speedo then screw the cover. How does that turn the needle of the speedometer?
I'll check the other end of the cable which is connected to the rear end of the gearbox.
What should I look for if the cable is worn out or if the speedometer itself is actually broken

Cheers

The end of the inner cable should be square or have something to drive the gears in the speedo. Also pull out the end in the gearbox and make sure the plastic drive is still connected to the inner cable and everything turns freely.

well the speedo end cable only looks like a plain cable and the cover (like bicycle cable)
I can see the tip of the metal part of the cable, I cant see any square part near the tip of the cable.
The back of the speedo haas this hole and tried fitting the cable in that hole and slide right through the hole...

Will check the other end later today after work

thanks

Sorry to barge in on this forum, but i have something else also to ask about the speedo.

When I drive from standstill away then speedo starts to climb as the speed increases. Ok this is fine.
BUT what I have noticed is that the needle jumbs about 2mm up and down as the speed increases up to 40km/h and then it starts to get less.
At about 60km/h it still has a very small bouncing effect of about 1 mm.
Is my speedo starting to wear out or is this just something our dattos do. When my clutch was removed I removed the speedo cable to look if everything is fine.
I cleaned it and put some oil on it and placed it back in again. So I do not think it is the cable.

Thanks.

When I got my 120Y the speedo used to jump up and down a bit...the plastic cogs inside the speedo itself were worn out.
