Folks
Can anyone tell me about 5-speed g/boxes. In particular a datrally 5sp, with 5th gear= 1:1. What does this mean? Will this make my ute
a) stop roaring at over 90km's/ hr
b) make it even more fuel efficient
c)affect anything else in any other way

I am running a standard A12 which, despite being a little tired goes pretty damn good (it's original!)

Any info you have would be most appreciated. N.B - Is a tailshaft/ diff centre conversion required to complete the processes?

No..
you might get to maximum speed quicker though.

It may be a little more fuel efficient.

It may give your left arm a slightly better muscle tone.

Neither new Diff or tailshaft is needed.

But given your requirements, this isn't the gearbox that you need. Unless it is free or very cheap.

Look for a regular Sunny 5 Speed.

Chris.

swap ya my 60A overdrive 5spd for your 1:1 top box!
will reduce your cruising rpm!
I'm coming to Aussie soon so I'll chuck it in my suitcase!

The 1 to 1 ratio means that for every rotation of the engine, you get one rotation of the tailshaft.
It is not underdrive, it is not overdrive, it is direct drive. Your four speed is "direct in top" or 1 to 1 ratio in fourth gear.

In the five speed, first gear will be a little lower ratio, but you will have basicly five ratios more closely grouped, with less ratio spacing between them, than your four speed. You will love it so much that you will be swapping cogs more & your left arm will surely gain some muscle "tone"

Fuel economy is, in the end, up to you, but in hilly terrain, it will help fuel efficiency by providing a ratio more closely related to the best ratio that you need at that time.

The direct drive, or direct in fifth gearbox is the "sports drivers" gearbox, while the "overdrive in fifth" is more suited to economy driving as the tailshaft rotates slightly more than once for every engine rotation
