are you suggesting these kit cars should be considered to be Lotus7's and not be considered ICVs?

clearly a manufacturer making a vehicle (or kit) today needs to meet requirements of the day, not 1960 requirements simply because the vehicle they make 'vaguely resembles' a Lotus 7.

Getting back to the hot rod argument...

They are actually defined a SR or Street Rod. They include anything built before 1949 with a body and a frame, including reproductions, and just about anything goes as long as it is in the new national regulations or is approved by an engineer. Obviously you have to be fairly sensible with what you are doing.

If you're interested in further reading I can send you the regulations or you can download them from the dotars website.

dodgeman is spot on (again...)

hot rods with repro chassis are classed as an MPV. they have to meet 1949 regulations in regards to light intensity and safety etc - however, there are new national laws brought about as a joint venture between the NHRA and the RTA covering minimum sizes for chassis (100x50x3.0 box section for pre '34, 150x50x3.0 for post 35), max wheel widths (10in on the rear, no more than 4in difference between f & r), max engine sizes (6.0L for pre 27, 7.55L for 27-34, normal engineering regs for anything 35-49).

it's curbed the disturbing trend of "rat rods" - a rusted out 22 T with a big block, 4 wheel drum brakes, 18 x 3 wire front wheels with 15 x 12 rears and rusted out 'speed holes' for the salt flat racer look.

Wow! Y'all "bunnied" the hell out of that thread! All I wanted was to tell you about my new toy and see if anyone had any 710 badges. I didn't mean to start a war.

No, but I may have to start sleeping at the shop to afford it!

well funnily enough the same subject came up the other night at the clubman meeting

we are talking about trying to get a standardised national code for our type of vehicle, and are liasing with several clubs that have had the same uphill battle (eg trikes). we have had people go over the pits with things like aeroscreens and sidepipes and get knocked back, only to have cars with the same thing get passed on any other day. and why is it with a vehicle that is feasibly only driven 10% of the time we have to comply with euro 2 emission standards?

another point to note is we have to comply with something like 4000 nm of torsional rigidity for our chassis' from what I saw at a recent hot rod show I'm sure there are alot of vehicles that would twist if put on the testbed.

Perhaps you have noticed the fact thay there are no new "T" buckets on full registration anymore. The only ones tou see are cars that were first registered many years ago. We can get them registered on the "permit to move" scheme [Street rod registration] which allows some concessions.
Rods with repro chassis & glass bodies are subject to new car type reg's, but not necessarily ICV requirements as some design elements seem to be "type approved"
Once again, most are on the restricted 'street rod registration'

The plan to gather togerther several clubs is a good one as there is strength in numbers. You seem to be fighting the battle that we were first engaged in thirty years ago. Never give up, & good luck.

yes, one of the guys in the club says his next door neighbour has a bucket registered and he has to get it inspected by a member of the hotrod association once a year apparently. we are aware of certain concessions we get at the moment so we are going to have to play it safe with any negotiations incase they backfire and result in a total clampdown.
