I looked up some info about Cairns. I had only previously heard that it was a tourist area of some sorts. Looks like a small city (pop. 124,000) but isolated from any major metropolitan area.

It's closer to the equator than Hawaii is.

So how far is it from Melborne to Cairns? (km/miles) If anyone has driven, how long did it take?

I will be coming to townsville at some stage. My brother lives there and I do want to visit him.
I do promise I will post a photo of my ute once the new wheels and suspension are on. I'm also going to post a photo of the Engine when it's complete in about two weeks, it should look sweet.
Melbourne to Cairns is approximately 3,450km's, well that's what I got off another website.

It's a long way, I think it's about 3500 kms from Melbourne to Cairns. So more than 2 days driving. Unless you are crazy, then you might JUST do it in 1 full day.
