Well here goes, {some of you guys know the story}
My gearbox was recently taken apart and had the reverse gear replaced and put on again, reverse works fine now, however the clutch wasnt releasing fully, and there was a windy, spinning noise, however when clutch was pressed in, the noise dissapeared.
We took out the box, checked evreything, ie, release bearing, fronk, clutch and pressure plate, cable adjustment.
Now, she releases clutch properly, having to adjust the cable fully{no more adjustment left on cable now}.
The noise is still there{not so bad as before} whilst not having the clutch pressed in, but dissapears when clutch pressed in fully.
I thaught the noises will dissapear after a while of driving, but hasnt.
The fwd gears are a bit sticky whilst driving.

Before replacing the reverse gear, all fwd gears were perfect, the clutch was also better and lots more to adjust on cable.

PS, I have refered to w\shop manuals as well.

I know that the box needs to be dropped again.

Whats going on? Please help.

ANY ADVICE WELCOME...

Hi Reeves

I am really really sorry to tell you this, but your gearbox is never going to be the same again.
Mine was also 100% right BEFORE i let it be opened to replace all bearings inside.
Since then it has never been the same.
There was always something wrong.
Either a loud wining sound or gears struggling to be selected.
Did you guys use the right weight gearbox oil?
That sound you are talking about, mine is also doing that.
I have been driving it for a couple of years now. Still doing it.
I have since gotten use to it as it is only when car is idling and in neutral with clutch depressed.
It is something to do with the clusters inside that are spinning.
Mine does'nt wine but makes this spinning sound you are talkking about.

Goodluck.

Yeh GXMAN,

I dont think that the g\oil weight would be much of a difference with this sound, remember the oil I had before was more than maybe 5yrs old, and it didnt have these sounds I'm experiencing now.

And now, I guess that I'll have to get the a14 g\box.{once I have the bucks}

Personally, my opinion on repairing these a12 boxes is not really worth it, time, labour, and money.

mine des it some times. its the front gearbox bearings apparently, took it to my mechanic that siad this, got it confirmed from a transmission guy,he said he could rebuild it for $500, i said ive got 6 spares, its cheaper to keep swapping them, can use 10 gearboxes for the same price and they would pobably last 5 times as long as the rebuilt.
when you can still pick up a decent gearbox for $50, it much easier, unless its a 5 speed

Hi Reeves

No.
What I wanted to know about the oil is that it will sometimes make the gear changing easier and slicker using a different oil weight. But you said it was fine in the past. So it is ok.

Something that I don't like about the 5 speed is that you now have one extra gear to select to get the same speed as you would in fourth gear with a four speed gearbox.
I don't like changing gears often that is why I like the 4 speed.
Try and get a fully rebuild 4speed at a gearbox place that you know give a GOOD job and a good guarentee.
i am sorry to hear about your problem with the gearbox. I have learned through my Datsun and my mother's Renault 5ts that a gearbox is the most difficult thing to solve problems on.
Everything looks fine but when the wheels start to turn, strange things start to happen.
Someone at a gearbox place told me NEVER to mix different gearbox gears.
It causes problems.
Through personal experience I found this to be true.

Goodluck

Thanks for the info bro.

However, whilst checking for prices on boxes from various g\boc recondioners, youll be suprised that the a12 box sell for more than the a14 ones. Prices for these boxes minimum R1.800 plus trading in my old box.

I think, I'll pull out the box, the last time this weekend, and if still no luck, I'll just use it whilst searching for another box.

I hope that I get lucky for a good box at a give away price, cause I spent alot already

check the thrust berring, my bros car was making a wurring metlic noise only at idle with the clutch out. we had it checked and the thrust berring was just starting to seize, it was also getting hard to change and select gears because the clutch wasnt fully in. if its comming out check the thrust berring. Good luck.

Hi Reeves

Did you pull out the gearbox the weekend?
Is it still making the sound?

I think the 4 speeds are more expensive because they have been replaced quite a long time ago with the 5 speed.
4speed parts not available as much as the 5 speeds parts.
Let me know if you got a solution.

If possible, please PM me the gearbox places that you phoned that had the 4 speed in stock.
Thanks
