Tonight I'm watching TV (US) and a Toyota truck commercial comes on. There's a ute in the picture, maybe an 8"extended cab and square headlights. Any ideas what it might be?

Maybe it's a Toyota? By 'ute' do you mean a unibody-style pickup (like an el camino, ranchero or Datsun B120)?
Toyota had topless Forerunners, did they not? Maybe that's what it was. A removable-top SUV.
