Early Falcons had slow steering with five turns of the wheel lock to lock, so it really needs something, but i don't know of too many who can legitimately complain about the steering in out beloved Datsuns. This may account for the lack of conversion kits in the marketplace.

i Have looked into doing rack and pinnion on a 1200 .. a few problems are finding a rack that is short enough ,, because if its to wide you will get bump steer ,,you need the rack end joint pivots the same distance as the tire rod innerpivots you have on the you car now to over come that problem .. also the steering spindle shaft would most likely hit the starter motor if your using A series engine in a RHD car .. The best Rack i have found so far is one from as a early Ford laser or Mazda 323 .. But they are still to wide but with a few mods i recon it would still fit ..but there is the starter motor problem then ..

thanx for your input
i have no problem with the stearing ratio in the 1200 i just thaught that the rack has less moving parts so woul have less were problems and be easyer to fix
did you try the ford escort rack as they are a similer size to the 1200

esky racks are a good size, as are camira / N13 pulsar racks.

in fact the GM/Daewoo range is what i would use for a smaller car. the arms swing from the centre of the rack and reduce bump steer significantly.

see my rack and pinion page for an explanation of things to watch out for.
