i was at northern wreckers on the northern road today,in sydney, when i spotted a blue sunny sedan in the line of datsuns.written on the windscreen was 5 speed.don't believe it.it's just a small 4 speed with worn selectors,so it'll slip into the slot above reverse.i know because i recently saw the same car in a car yard at granville,& had a real close look at it.however,it's got 15 inch trx mags with good tyres, the engine appears not to be an a12,because the engine number has been ground off & a new one stamped in it's place,it's got a dgv weber, etc, but the body is rooted.the original car yard had got it from another yard, were it was a trade in.not surprised this car ended up in a wrecker, just a co-incidence it was one i go to regularly.i told the boss of the yard it wasn't a 5 speed,& they might change the sign, but then again...

Did you look at the #'s on it or turn the input/output shafts? I'm not saying you made a mistake, but for a 4 speed to shift into a 5th hole would take some pretty special circumstances. The tailshaft housing would have to be from a 5 speed, as a 4 speed is not drilled for movement of the reverse shift rail to go to 5th. The 5th hole for the shift rail would be a non-wear item. If the tailshaft housing is from a 5 speed, the transmission probably is a 5 speed. The best explanation I have is that the transmission is a 5 speed but is missing 5th gear, although I don't think it would be as simple as just leaving 5th gear off the mainshaft as the coupler ring would cause problems and the baulk spring would push the chicklets out. Then you would have a nonshifting transmission. I think it would be worth a little investigation seeing how you guys have to pay so much for 5 speeds. Maybe you could get it for a 4 speed price?

it was a 56a transmission,& i've had this problem before with little 4 speeds.besides, the only 5 speed in this size has the dogleg first.maybe they used some 5 speed rear housings on 4 speeds, but not in a sunny.there was definitely no gear in the slot,in fact the gearlever stuck in this position & needed some gentle persuasion to get it out.

Too bad it's not around here, I would have liked to pull it apart and see what makes that happen.
