#1 Diff oil leak?
heathbruce Posted on: 2005/1/19 0:05
We have a 1200 ute diff in a 1200 coupe. There is oil leaking from the right hand side where the axle goes in the diff housing.
As I understand this is a friction seal by the bearing on the axle.
Has anyone got any thoughts on fixing the oil leak? (new bearing, some sort of sealant)
cheers
Bruce

Good news Bruce, it's an easy fix! There is a seal in the end of the diff housing behind the bearing. The seal runs on (and seals to )the wheel bearing retainer on the oil side of the bearing. Remove axle, replace seal and reinstall axle. Check for bad pitting or deep grooves on the retainer as either will gladly eat a new seal. Do both sides as the other is just waiting for you to look the other way before it too leaks . Be careful reinstalling axles as most damage occurs as you bounce splines over them or force the retainer past. Also check that your breather on top of the diff is clean and clear as they tend to become encrusted with crud and stop the diff from breathing, hence forcing oil out under pressure.
Good luck with the job !!
Cheers

(still need to clean the breather)
