Yeah, i agree wholeheartedly. A well built engine with a positive displacement blower will produce really good torque right off idle. Thats the beauty of those humungous Chrysler Hemi's with the 6-71 blowers. While they have the ability to pull big revs, the fact is that you could redline them at 3,500 & they would still tow-rope a Winebago towing a Yacht over the rockies, in fourth gear. Well, maybee third.

If you got the torque, then jack up the gear ratios & hang on tight.

So what sort of PSI can you run before you blow things? Is it much more fun to drive with a blower?

It is very strongly advised to use forged slugs for aplications that exceed 12psi.
At a guess, I wouls say 5-8/9 ish.

Are they fun to drive???
HELL YES!!!!!!!!!

how it went

After driving it for a week while I put a cammed up A14 into my daily driver, the N/A A14 felt as gutless as hell.

The old engine s*** itself, because I was an Iidiot and gave it death when it wasn't tuned right.
My new engine I am building is an A15. I will be dispencing with the decomp shim. I may well also reduce the blower speed a bit to reduce the intake charge temp. (Although , with the new motor having a larger swept volume, the boost will come down a bit anyway.
I have decided to munch out the slugs in the lathe to lower the CR, but still leave the squish band intact to help prevent detonation.

i'll be s'cing an A12 in a while.

i find the rev-ability of the A12 appealing.

i'll be using a toyota blower and a draw thru carby setup (prob a 2in SU).

The whole idea of s/c ing is torque. you don't have to rev the nuts off it, Just grab another gear and hang on. plus, if you go reving it too hard the charge heats up. And then.... well you know what happened to me.

sorry - should clarify that.

rev-a-bility of the A12 as in with such a short stroke it responds really well - revs rise and fall pretty quickly. but i also like it coz it revs HIGH too - but that's not what i meant in this case.

plus, an SC14 on an A12 would still produce boost at 8000rpm-ish.

I think he means those electric superchargers.

good luck getting more than 1-2 PSI boost...

yeah, with the engine OFF

Yes, it would.
My S/C engine still made boost at 8000.
You'd be better off to run a bit less boost, and have a cooler charge.
Mind you, with the larger blwer, you could spin it slower to create the same boost.
However, it's not just the blower speed that makes heat, it's also the compretion of the charge thats generates it. (ever put your hand on the discharge of a compressor when its been running awhile?)
