I just thought I would report my findings for anyone who is planning on using a skyline stumpy gearbox on a CA20 bellhousing. After putting the bellhousing over the gearbox it turns out that the smaller bearing visible in the bellhousing (The secondary shaft main bearing) is actually smaller than the cast hole/support in the bellhousing. This effectively means that the secondary shaft would only be supported at one end if something wasn't done about it!

Now all you have to do is get a prefferably new bearing from that same shaft from the CA20 gearbox. The NGK number of the bearing is B22-19C3UR. To swap the bearings over it is best to have someone press the old one off and the new one on but it involves the whole box to be pulled apart and can be costly.

People are going to cringe but I managed to get mine off reasonably easy with some wedges and hammers. The new bearing taps on quite easily.

Now the moral of this story is, use the S13 box from the start. I wish I did
It's a stronger, smoother box and even though it costs a little more in the beginning it would be marginal once you have considered the time and extra money involved in modifying the skyline box.

The main reason people used the stumpy box as I did was that it fits in the tunnel a lot better. The gearbox itself is not as good as the standard ca18det box. The S13 gearbox is usually a lot cheaper than the stumpy boxes as the stumpy boxes are getting harder to find.
Fiting a S13 gearbox requires a hell of a lot more trans tunnel work.
Some of the drag guys are using RB20-25 boxes behind the ca20- ca18 belhousing they are heaps stronger again.
if I where to start from scratch again on a CA18 conversion I would have stuck it out with the stocko box. Hindsight is a wonderfull thing.

I done a CA18 conv and i used a nissan pintara 5 speed. bolts straght on. BUT a bit weaker but if you blow it there cheap as !

for my conversion i used the 240k box and put a pintara bell housing on the front usuing the bigger bearing. I was told it is the same bearing as used in the navara,
I found the 240k box to work well and even the 1200 speedo cabel fitted up with out a problem,
how do you go fitting up the 1200 speedo cabel to a standard ca18 box?

think i hade to change it .i cant rember.

I have this stumpy box in my aunties shed in Australia now that i am using my S13 box in the conversion that the 1200 legend Kev, up in Ipswitch, is diligently slaving away with - jeeze Kev's a champion.
