Re: Datsun A12/A14 engine in a Sprite?

find either the a14,or an a15 from a 210 (b310).you might as well go for the largest engine,as it will be easier to get the target
horsepower.a set of twin sidedraught carbs, plus a decent exhaust,a warm(not mild, not hot) cam, plus balancing,a lighter flywheel(stock a12 on a14/a15),should get you the power.this is basically what i had in a 210 sedan (sunny in australia),& it was a quick engine, revving to 7000 rpm.it only died because of pre ignition melting the piston down to the top piston ring.we didn't know this had happened until we went looking for the misfire, which was due to a piece of piston ring closing down the sparkplug gap.mind you,the ring came from no 1 cylinder,& the spark plug in question was in no 4.just be ready for all the purest spidget owners to sneer at you as you overtake (lap) them, because yours isn't original.

Thanks for the reply... I am not worried about purists sneering, as my ex-racing Bugeye is already far from original!
By a pair of sidedraught carbs, I assume you mean a pair of Webber DCOEs, probably 40s considering the size of the engine? Another advantage would be to lower the overall height of the engine, which would help clear the bonnet. JLC

Excellent - another person wanting to put a Datto engine in a sprite!
I had a previous user name as 'sprite63' but have changed email addresses since then... anyway I'm in Australia and have an datto engined/gearboxed sprite - and I can promise you that it's a great move to make from the origional BMC motor... and it's great to see the look of a purists eyes when they see a japanesse engine stuck in a british car. Being in Australia I can't really help with tuners etc, but can tell you that you don't really need to dry-sump your engine because the bonnet will fit over the front of the rocker cover... just. It's good to keep it looking standard so people have no idea what you have in the engine bay I say. Anyway the biggest problem you will have is the twin sidedraft webbers. You will have to cut out a good proportion of the top of the passenger side footwell to have room for them - on second thoughts a bigger problem for you in the states cause I presume your car is left hand drive - so you will have to cut out a sizable chunk of your own foot-well. I have a single side draft 45 webber attached to a custom manifold that is angled just a little to clear the footwell - so I did not have to modify the body at all. anyway PM me if you want any details as to what to do - but my advice - just do it! Matt.

1963sprite which engine do you have? A12s are shorter than A14s and A15s (which are the same height) and this may be a factor for fitting an A series into a tight engine bay. There is some dry sump info on this site just use the search function on the left and I think you'll find some pics and info for the alloy dry sump pan that I think comes from the US anyway.

Sorry, should have been more clear - currently got an A12 with a A14 head... but previously had an A14 in there - which will be put back in soon.
I was referring to putting an A14 engine in - just squeezed in there. You can view topic.
