Another question now, can you use the stumpy bellhousing or do you need to use a specific one to bolt it to an L18?

The R30 (stumpy) box is a 71B short extension housing box.

look for f5w71 on any build plate of the r30 skyline,if you go to a wrecker.the 5 means 5 speed & the 71 means the two main shafts are
71 mm apart.it'll probably read f5w71b.but,that
w could also be an s,i can't quite remember.i think it has something to do with the gear selection method, internal shifter like a car,or
external connection like a van.

there are no dogleg R30 Skyline 5spds. You've got the smaller and weaker Stanza 5spd, which is also a short tail (stumpy) box.

It's not all bad though, the Stanza 5spd has slightly better ratios, whereas the Skyline has a bit of a 'hole' between 2nd to 3rd ratios. Stanza 5spds don't deserve their reputation for being weak. I used one in my L18 1200 for about 5 years, including a couple of years of sprints and hillclimbs, before it cried enough.

A Stanza 5spd is worth about $150 around here, and Skyline 5spds can be picked up for around $250 from wreckers, but I have heard of some absolutely crazy prices being quoted to people. Or you can do what I did and buy a whole MR30 Skyline for $100 and wreck it.
