#15 Re: manual valve bodies and manualizing autos question

I rang a reputable auto place today and found out a few things.

1. The JATCO box is very comon in lots of cars from mazdas to nissans to holdens, even VL turbos run the jatco with an overdrive setup infront of the box but the first three gears are the same. So its a very strong box (proably unbreakable with an a12) there would be no problem running these boxes behind an a14 or a15.

2. Fully manualized valve bodies are purchaseable and they even reverse the order of the gears (ie instead of it being N D 2 1 it will be N 1 2 3(D) which is better for racing) But this is too expensive for me, I was quoted $1000 supplied and fitted so it looks like I will have to look into making more vaccume (with the canister thing first then if that dont help I will tap a thread and put a vaccume fitting into the other side of my manifold as well)

Cheers everyone so far.

uterous is this 4 sure about the tunnel (ie have u had 1st hand experiance with this?) Or have u just heard about this being the case. cause the tunel in my SR datto is alot bigger than the auto tunnel.

If it dont fit then it will be done properly no gentel persuasion with a hammer on my datto thanks.

Besides i would like to be able to seperate the gearbox from the engine in the car not like my current SR 1200

Dodge man u bring me hope!

Anyone know any auto specialists in syd aus preferably close to sutherland shire (south east syd)?
Pretty sure that any auto specialist will easily be able to manualise the valve body.

Its running only one carb (ie 2 cyl per throat)

Will look into the vaccume canister.

Thanks for this alternative info will have to wait till monday till i can ring an auto dude.

thanks again

other possable ways of "fixing" the problem without a lot of brain damage are to use the vacuum advance port for the distributor to also supply the trans. or get a vacuum canister like many of the GM and Ford cars use on thier cruise controll systems, these look something like a juice can with vacuum fittings on them, built into them is a one way valve to allow vacuum to be stored and allow enough to be there when it is needed,
you can probably get one at a local wrecker for next to nothing. that would save you the time and expense of modifying or changing the trans.

The following applies to the 3N71B transmision & was gleaned from my B210 factory manual. If the 1200 trans is the same model [& i suspect that it is] then it is relevant

Manualising the transmision involves making some adjustments to the govornor, modulator & gear selection control circuits on the trans. ALL of these parts seem to be accessable with the trans still in the car, even if it means pulling the extention housing.
The valve body assembly is accessable by pulling the pan & it can then be removed entirely from underneath if necessary.

A clever auto trasns bloke will be able to give you some sort of answer, & maybee even an estimate if he can get a look at your workshop manual first as the factory book is extremely comprehensive.
Removal of the trans should only be necessary if you need to overhaul the mechanical parts of the driveline within the transmision case itself.

Another alternative is to change manifolds & run one DelOrto instead. When correctly tuned, it will likely run better vacuum figures & the trans will work better, but i suspect that one carb doesn't provide the right image in the engine bay for most people.

So I do have to pull out the box to manualize it thanks for clearing this up Freak (it was a question in my first post) so obviously its going to be expensive so i proably wont do it then.

That sux cause i put the dellorto on because the standard carb was rooted now i got to spend even more time and money to get it to drive normaly A12 AUTO'S SUCK (actually all autos suck) looks like its time to transplant the SR from my other car into the beast no more SLOW ASS 1200 FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DAM AUTO'S

It would be cheaper to just put a manual in. Your going to have to have the auto out anyway to get it manualized so why not just get a $50 4speed and a pedal box + clutch $90 brand new or find a semi decent used one that someone is just throwing away and bolt her up. Much less hassle and probably cheaper.

Check out some FIAT sites, I have twin dellortos and virtually no cacuum for my brake booster.
Some yank cars had similar problems and use an electrical pump to create vacuum.
Good luck
