i purchased a conversion kit for my a-series distributer which cost me AU$230 which was made by crane cams and was called the fire ball XR700. the kit consisted of a small converter unit, an optical triger and three(4cyl, 6cyl and 8cyl) sloted wheel that were to be adapted to the shaft of the dizzy. it was a simple an effective modification that works excellent with my accel super coil (AU$130)and hks iradium sparkplugs(AU$35each)

not saying mine is beter but it does put out a hell of a spark

I've always thought that a rebuilt engine was one with new bearings and rings and not much else..while a reconditioned engine included all the fruit???

dodgeman why the hell are you spending three and a half G on an A series???? i know what it costs to "rebuild" a motor but how can you spend those $$$? even if the pistons are custom forged and the rods are H beam or something i could undestand it... maybe. but for a guy who has never stuffed a H145 diff coz he's a carefull driver - no need for those bits? shed some light into you wallet's diet

my 2cents worth.
People seem to get so cheap when they talk datsuns, i asked my mum to get me some new tailights for my sedan as a 23rd bday present, she said she would and after she found out they where $105.00 per side (Shock Horror!!) she refused and bought me a hundred dollars worth of clothes. I went on to tell her that she should try and buy a pair of tailights for one of the new monaro's out there, or maybe some of those clear ricer jobs for her starlet, and she would be lucky to get change out of 1k. but she just laughed. Go figure that! People have absolutely NO perspective sometimes. And when it comes to rebuilds, most of the cost is labour so the more you can do yourself the better off you will be.

For simalar money you will get one of ferals dissys they give better spark & you can buy parts for them from any spare parts shop.
Buy the time you buy the the forklift dissy then get it recurved to suit the cam it would nearly be around the seme price to get one of feral dissys that will be already recurved for your engine.
But i dont no much as im just a dumb mechanic

Now back on topic. Dodgeman I bet you have an electronic dizzy youd like to sell me.
Trust me my friend, i'm not sure that i have that much money to put into an engine either, but as i have writen earlier, this car is a simple & cheap project gone horribly wrong. I couldn't help myself, & now i'm in so deep that i have to finish it.

As for the distributor,... you are half right,... I do in fact have one of Ferals lovely electronic distributors, but i'm sorry [no i'm not] it isn't for sale.
You too can have one just like it, but at a price that is similar to the fork lift ones, just give Errol a call.

Actually, at $404 for a brand new electronic distributor assembly, it isn't too bad a price. To get a perspective, just price new electronic distributors for other four cylinder cars. I believe that they will all be up near that figure or higher.

Yes I was only having a dig at you . I know without my family I would be up ####ters ditch. I couldnt image yet alone afford to put that much money into an engine.

Criticize? come come now,.. surely you jest.
Rebuild is one of those words that doesn't seem to have a formal meaning & it can mean diferent things to diferent people, which is why i am always suspicious when it is used. At trade pricing, the parts involved in a minor overhaul, when done properly, will cost somewhere near that figure, while a re-"build" is normally used to describe either a major overhaul, or a recondition job.
Your ready access to skilled [& free] labour, along with the services that these people can provide [like major head work] was unknown to me [us]
To rebuild your engine as you describe for under $450 has to be a real bargain.

The costs involved in my engine "rebuild" have run to somewhere near $3000 so far [pistons, rings, head job, rods, crank, distributor, plugs, adj. cam sprocket] & i have not dismantled the short block yet. By the time it is running, it may end up costing as much as ten times your figure, hence the curiosity about the definition of "rebuild"
