Info needed on L16 engine

Hey guys thanks for all the help with the ute and the CA18det conversion. I have actually sold the ute and brought a datsun 1600 has had a ground up restoration and looks great but still had a L16.

Is it common for these engines to make no power above 4000rpm?

The engine is stock bar exhaust and jsut seem really sluggish. Even the ute with an A14 felt quick compared to it lol.

Is this pretty normal or should i be looking to do a tuneup pretty quickly.

The engine doesnt have to last long as going sr20 conversion.

With a stock carb? Yes.

Stock carb is usually the first thing to get binned...

Also, if you have the stock dizzy, the points are likely worn out. And even when new, they will "float" around at higher rpms causing a noticeable loss of power.

hmm ok thats sound like it could be the problem

i picked up the car with twin SU's and an electronic dizzy, i will fit these and see how that goes

you have twin SUs on an L16 in a datto 1600?

if they are stock - then you have a genuine SSS on your hands.

and if it is genuine, and you cut it to fit a CA18DET - then the datsun world en-masse will have to kill you.

find out if it is a SSS or not first - you could sell it and buy one complete with an SR20DET for the money it would fetch if were original.

why cant people stop killing datsuns in projects that dont go anyware?

hi pro-240c dont fret i too understand the importance of maintaining the proud sss heritage. it is defiantley just a l16 with standard carb setup, i brought the car from a guy, who has a twin su setup ready to bolt on but was never originally mounted to the car. it sounds though as you have some good knowledge regarding these engines is it worthwhile putting the twin su's on in the interim thanks?

would say 106hp instead of 96hp on the id plate in the engine bay, twin su's for a l series are real easy to find, have two pairs if anyone wants them, carton of woodies a pair!! lol. I personally dont like su's, well not the hitatchi nock-offs anyway, the british su's are a far better carb, but if you want power then the right cam and twin sidedraughts webers or dellortos are the go. my 2cents anyway.

here in portugal the sss say 109hp or 105hp dependig from the year. and the 510 standard say 96hp or 100hp depending of the year too.

my sss say 109hp and he is from 1971.and he have one A87 number on the head.

Ground up restoratoin "but" with an original L16, what did you expect? If it didn't have the L16, it wouldn't be a restoration, it would be a rebuild.
A restoration is where all the original mistakes are re-installed into the car, including an original engine.

Give this engine a full tune up & see how it goes from there. Make sure that the second throat of the carb kicks in as it is supposed to. Point bounce should not kick in untill somewhere near 6,000 revs, but then again, one would not normally see these kind of revs in a stock engine unless the engine is being abused.
