I have recently purchased a toyota (yes I know toymotor) T50 5 speed and there is oil in the bellhousing and it smells like gear oil.... so im guessing that the front main seal is leaking.

Does anyone have any experiance with these boxes or is there anyone that can tell me how to fix this? or maybe Im better of taking it to a gearbox place.

Did you buy a car with the gearbox in it, or just the gearbox?

If it's just the box, then i assume that you will be using it behind a Datsun engine. [a lot of assuming going on here.]

The Dellow bellhousing incorporates the front part of the box, so you will need to install a new seal anyway. If no Datsun engine, then a pox on your gearbox, but untill it kicks in, see if you can get a Gregories on that car model. It will be a lot cheaper than a tradesman doing it & it shouldn't be a hard job..

TExx corollas/T-18
AE86- sprinter

yeah anything with a T or a RWD A engine

K50 5spd
KE70 1982 "xx" corolla sedan top of the range
there were also some other KExx cars with the K50 such as the KE50 2 door hatch/liftback (similar to the t-18 just earlier)

count the splines on the output shaft, the stronger t50's had 22 or 23 spline, the weaker ones 20 spline. dellow sells the yoke to fit the 22/23 spline for $100, good luck finding one of these at the wreckers. The t50 bellhousing has a paper gasket between it and the gearbox. If it leaks it has the gear oil smell (sulpur/crappy smell) unlike engine oil. Check this first.
If you are smart you can use a datsun 1200 clutch fork, cut a square hole on drivers side of the box and keep your datsun cable clutch. Mine has been working well for over 12 months and is as light as.
The tailshaft from a mazda 929 wagon is also a close fit, check this out as well.

Cheers Ill count the splines tomorow.
The bellhousing is for a cable made like that from dellows. It just uses the original clutch cable.

I tripple counted the splines on my gear box and there is 21 splines.
Would all these gearboxes have different seals? or the same?

I can't remember the spline numbers, but basically there are 3 different types of T50. An early one (Celica), a late one (AE86, AE71 etc) and one in between (T18). The "strong" gearbox is the late one, and it has a bigger front bearing, and a bigger output shaft.

I don't know what configuration the T18 one is in, but I do know about the early and late ones. Since you only have the gearbox itself and not the bellhousing, the easiest way to tell which is which is the shifter position.

The early one has the shifter sort of at the front of the extension housing, and the late one has the shifter right on the end, where the tailshaft goes on.
