Well progress has been going good in my project, got the engine, g/b and everything else in and all lines done and wired in, so im pretty much 85% done (got my new tires today 195/50s' much better!!) but of course theres another bloody problem like normal...

I recall this happening before i took the engine out and started the project - what it does is when i turn the key to START it goes 'click' then nothing, and when i take it back to ON it goes a 'clunky' sorta sound. Now ive checked all the wiring just by eye and everything's connected where it should be and all earths are accounted for etc....
If my memory serves me correctly this mite be my starter/igniton switch and one of the connections mite be faulty yeah? the starters fine im pretty sure, well it was before i pulledd it out, so whats on the agenda??
THe problem is is that this will be the first time the engine has been cranked over so its a vital start!!! And i was thinking of taking it to an auto electrics and tell them to just fix it to the point of they know that the engine is cranking and not let them start the thing...if you get me

Im sooo fukcing sick of this bloody car causing me mayhem and im starting to get soo annoyed that im looking for another Datto if things dont go my way soon........dont get me wrong i love the thing its just things shouldnt be this hard!!!

Please guys i need advice and some comfort no one cares except for Datsun owners!!!

Cheers
Dave

sounds like your starter motors solenoid is buggered. You can sometimes solve the problem.Temporarlily of course by hitting the solenoid with something hard to free it up.

Another possiblity is the ignition barrel is stuffed and you are turning the key to far. Turn the key just to start and not right round.

But by the noise you describe I would say solenoid.

So this means i have to take the bloody thing off.....great, more scratched knuckles hahaha
This starter is actually off my other ex sunny (A12) coz the one of this motor (A15) shagged itself, got water inside and screwed rusted the bushes. So if i take it apart and inspect should be able to find the cause?
Oh and ive tried the ignition barrel off the other sunny aswell, and that never had problems with starting....and it still wont work!

Cheers
Dave

just hit it, check your battery maybe, my dads bike does the same and the batterys flat so maybe its that. goes clickety click click click. there should be about 13.5 to 14 volts in the battery i think? anyway if that dont work, just hit it

Dont pull the whole starter apart just the solenoid. Cant remember if the solenoid can be opened up or not. After having a few starters do this to me I finally bought a brand spanking new one for $150 just so I dont have to think about it anymore. The new one turns it over good to. Its actually a fair bit bigger than the originals.

hi dave.
I have had the same problem with my green 120y coupe.
As it doesn't get used all that often, I went to start it to go for a weekend cruise and it wound over for a short period, before it made a clickety clack clack clack sound.
So I thought it may of been the starter motor, so I changed the whole starter over for another one that I had as a spare, but it still did the same thing.
So the other thing I thought it could of been was, that the battery was flat and didn't have enough power in it to crank the motor over.
Sure enough it was as I charged up the battery and away she fired, with no clackety clack sound.
So therefore I bought a new battery for it as it was a few years old and getting run down.
So make sure you have a fully charged battery in it.
Hope this helps you out, bye for now.
