Hey guys I see alot of advertising for caltex's E10 whihc has 10% ethanol, but I remember not too long ago there was a big rowe over petrol companies putting ethanol in their fuel and it was apparent;y buggering up engines.
They give it an octane rating of 95 which is considerably better then standard unleaded which is 92. I use caltex Vortex in my CA18DET, and it loves it, when I'm feeling rich I put in BP ultimate.

Would it be ok to use E10 in a turbo'd engine??

Thanks for any feedback

Cheers
damo

http://goefuel.com/facts/mythbusters.html

It's a PRO-ethanol website. But it appears to cover most of the questions.

I guess it depends on the concentration of ethanol being added. As ethanol can exist in an aquious solution (water), low concentration ethanol could cause problems.

it seems good I was always under the impresion (which was from other people saying that this was true) that it left deposits in the chamber, I don't see how it can as it's an alcohol, and has a higher concentrate of oxygen.

I'm all for it, but.... If it is so environmentally friendly, why hasn't it been used more in a society that is always complaining about air quality and the rising pump prise of fuel?

weren't there claims that the ethanol caused problems in the long term with rubber, or synthetic rubber components, like fiel hoses, pump diaphragms & needle tips? [as in needle & seat in carbs] I seem to recall that there was supposed to be an adverse reaction with some metals too.

Is it all true? Beats me.

Ethanol is the future. It can be made from green waste, and is renewable.

As for leaving deposits, that is B.S. Motors run on alky, are spotlessly clean inside when stripped.
Straight alky can be corrosive to alluminium, but aparently adding 1% deionised water helps overcome this.

I think you guys are getting mixed up. The recent uproar was because petrol stations were using toluene (like paint stripper) in there fuel without telling people (and yes toluene is used in some race fuels). It was doing things like melting plastic fuel bowls in motor bikes... Ethanol is good, it's just alcohol

Yes, alcohol can have effects on rubber fuel hose , etc.
That is why I have to make sure there are no rubber parts in the fuel system on my car (running 100% methanol)

The other thing to remember is that the required stoichometric ratio varies with the proportion of ethanol / methanol used.

For example, an engine running on straight unleaded fuel has an 'ideal' stoicometric ratio of 14.7:1 air to fuel, where as an engine running straight methanol has an 'ideal' stoicometric ratio of 5:1 air to fuel.

Long story cut short, the higher the percentage of ethanol / methanol used, the richer you need to run the engine.
