#1 My Turbo Dato Ute (now with pics)
fat14s Posted on: 2005/7/23 0:31
After heaps and heaps of indecision.....i chuckedmy turbo and other gear on .........

and i can tell you i have no idea why anyone would bother with all the fuss and money of a ca18.......cause my car absolutly CRACKS!!!!

I started with a rebuilt a14......got a t25, blow through webber carby, hks inlet hat, front mount, elctronic fuel pump and a fuel pressure regulater........ i had a guy make up a j pipe (no matter what anyone says .....these things work f**kin great!!!!!) the last thing i suggest is just a decompression plate which i got from acl and when used with hylomar and a good graphite head gasket ....it should hold fine.

I took this for a drive after tuning to 8psi .....it was raining here and i thought oh that'd be fun so i took it out and no matter how hard i try i just cant get any decent speed without the wheels spinning....even in third all the up to like 100kmph at one stage........

i just cant believe the balls this thing has

if any one has any questions or wouldlike to host some pics ...that'd good so i can show u guys the setup

great to hear that it works well..

some pics would be nice...

i have a feeling this thread may start a debate on ca vs turbo a.......

would be good if you could get some dyno figures and some 1/4 mile times...

we all know that turbo'd A series engines go hard.. but some figures would tell us just how hard!

good work

keep it up

NIce word dude! sounds like one heluva ride, love to see some pics and specs of it

What comp ratio are you running for it? Are you saying you DID put a de-comp plate on to drop it or you would suggest using it...?
There have been a few people with turbo A series engines on here but really no info or stats about how they run, or im looking in the wrong spot! Has anyone got 1/4 mile times and dyno figures for an A series turbo engine?

What weber you using, 32/36? Also where did you source the HKS inlet hat from?

Dave

No comment required. If this fella is happy (sound like it goes hard), then that's all that matters. But a good CA will rip the tyres in 3rd and 4th on a hot day, when installed in a 1200.

I'd love to take a ride in his frankenstein of an A-series

Cheers,
Chris

well done mate sounds awesome well done and cant wait to hear some 1/4 times and power figures.Watch that gearbox they smash realy easy once you have some power.(dont they Shaun )

But there is alot of reasons why people chose CAs like the reliabilty of an EFI turbo motor from the 90s for an example.

And chris is spot on my A15 with extractors used to spin 3rd in the wet now i can spin 3rd easy in the dry and 5th in the wet

to answer ur questions ....yes i did use a decompression plate......it is a 1.5mm acl item ....u use hylomar to glue it to the block and a good graphite head gasket.......

id also recomend a decomp plate and j pipe to anyone....if u look after it and it is well tuned it 'l go forever and be reliable enough........its not as quick as a ca i dont think but on the quarter i reckon i could get a low 14 with a bit more boost maybe even 13.99 but yeh al depends how it goes on the strip could be a demon setup could be a peice of #### setup...

to give u sum comparison it would give my bros worked gen3 ss a good run for its money

i sourced the hks inlet hat and carby by absolute fluke !!!!... it was literally sitting in a big pile of trash at this guys house ....(he builds performance cars).......the carby is actualy called a dmtt32/34

at the moment on 8psi it will have maybe around 110 hp but i meen 4 more pound boost and it'l be nothin other then a tyre munchine gearbox smasher!!

but yeh if people can host pics ill send em to ya

A series turbo'd engines are tuff but I went CA as previously said realiablility of EFI, but also the CA has more scope to get more power (ie bigger displacment, DOHC)

But with all turbod cars I just love the sound of the turbo spoolin then the kick in the back you get when it comes onto boost :)

i saw this beast today and it goes hard... j pipe all the way mate

twist up that bleeder valve and find out the safe boost limit with a good a/f meter...

it will go like a rocket on 12psi..
