The best future for high octane fuel for our combustion engines would have to be CNG compressed natural gas. Australia steals it off East Timor and sells it to China and Japan at 1 or 2c per litre. The only problem is storage as it needs more volume and tank size would be too heavy. Unfortunately we are at the beck and call of oil still in the 21st century.

LPG well....

And gasoline is relatively affordable here in the USA -- only about $2.80 USD/gallon. Diesel costs about 0.10 more.

I see a majority of large passenger vehicles every day. Even Nissan no longer sells a "small" truck here -- all the trucks are now "mid-size". And we have no small cars here, the smallest being "niche" cars like the Miata and the Mini. A few people are buying hybrids, but they still use a gallon of gas every 30-70 miles. I hear so many people saying they can't wait until they can afford a luxury seven-passenger SUV.

Has bus fares gone up around the country since the huge influx in prices?

Just thought I'd ad some interesting figures I found in The Bulletin a few weeks back. All have been converted to Australian dollars per Litre.

-World Bowser Prices-

Netherlands - $2.26
UK - $2.02
Germany - $1.94
AUSTRALIA - $1.16
US - $0.77
Russia - $0.73
China - $0.63
Saudi Arabia - $0.32
Nigeria - $0.13
Venezuela - $0.04

To add to what L18_B110 said, with petrol at $1/L,
Refinery price=39c
Federal excise=38.1c
Retail margin=13.8c
GST=9.1c

and how long will it last? current projections say there's about 40.5 years of oil left, but to put that in perspective, in 1974, they predicted 7 years until oil ran out.

So, current NZ & AU fuel prices are around U.S. $4.00 a gallon?

Here in San Diego, we're about U.S. $2.80/gallon for regular, and we're supposed to be the highest in the country.

that's funny - everytime our fuel prices rise they blame the world crude oil price. the politicians forget to mention that approx half our pump price is federal govt excise, and on top of that they charge their 10% GST. Yes that's right, they add tax to their tax. The treasurer must rub his hands together in glee everytime fuel prices go up, because it means they'll be gettting even more money for nothing!

If you guys are paying $1.30 a liter, thats almost $4.93 a gallon, IIR my conversions correctly.

Today, prices here are anywhere from $2.68 to $3 a gallon, depending on grade and location within the city :) I can't complain, since my Volvo, Pulsar, and Sunny wagon all sip the fuel :)

The silly people who drive giant trucks on the other hand, are probably ready to cry
