I think you will find that most members who compete in motorsport in their 1200's will agree with converted.
I have been involved in rallying for a long time so heres a little story about something that happened only last weekend.
My son has been driving my coupe for the last couple of years in small events, last weekend a Kharnacross was held in wet muddy conditions. One of my son's mates was there to watch what was going on. He's a burnout king and thinks he can handle a car no matter what the circumstances, or so he thought. He opened his big mouth after the event professing how quick he would be if he got the chance, so I suggested he jump in the nav seat of my coupe with my son so he could see what rallying is all about. Well the experience left him speechless and very white faced, he couldnt believe the car control necessary to run quick in the dirt.
The outcome is that the experience showed him that he has a looooong way to go with his driving skills and car control, something that cant ever be learnt on the street. Best part is he mentioned that the experience had taken away any pleasure he used to get when trying to drive quick on the street. No more burnouts form this kid.
End of lesson.
You wont be getting my vote either, if you are stupid enough to drive around on the street like some kind of self professed hero then the sooner they take your car of you the better it will be for everyone else.

Im not taking sides. Reading all these posts is interesting. It is the typical one person ####ing it all up for everyone. In bayswater in melbournes east. Once a month there was a big meet in a car park of old school hot rod guys showing off there cars. Then all the young blokes with commodores & wanker skylines turned up. When they all where leaving started doing stupid #### & then the cops put a stop to a years long tradition. So then every one wonders why the cops give them a hard time. All i have to say is grow up. Get on a race track & go fast. Its not expencive to go & do club sprints & alot of clubs need the numbers to to keep racing going. Who ever thinks there not a hoon get one step ahead of dick heads & suport a motorsport club & join in some sprint rounds & keep it off the street.
I will say i was no angle but i have grown up alot i hate walking past my dato in the driveway everyday knowing i cant drive it as i dont have a licence. I just thank my lucky stars that i didnt kill or injure anyone so its time to grow up.

i have driven plenty of hot and loud and attention attracting cars, including a 106dB-at-idle large EP RX7.

i have been pulled over more times than i can count.

not once have i left a "random license / breath check" or a "you were doing 64 in a 60 zone" with a yellow or a fine.

it's called the "d1ckhead test". they're bored, end of shift, need a quota...whatever. that's not their fault. just don't have an attitude when they pull you over to give them a reason to say "pop the bonnet, please".

saying dumbarse things like --->

"oh for fukcs sake, this is the third time i've been pulled over in as many days - this had better be good"

or

"don't you guys have some granny bashers to arrest"

or

"another random license check?"

<--- will only land you in the "d1ckhead" category, and the following "pop the bonnet" request.

if they do ask you to pop the bonnet, don't be the aforementioned d1ckhead and say things like --->

"you won't find anything"

or

"don't scratch the paint with your buttons / badge when you lean over the car"

or

"don;t touch anything under there okay? i've just had this thing tuned"

<--- or anything really stoopid like --->

"i'm yet to put this over the pits"

or

"funny thing, i'm just driving to the inspection centre, like, right now...!"

if the officer inspecting under the bonnet says "is that an oil leak?" or "what's that?"...for gods sake, be HONEST.

responses like --->

"i've never noticed that before - maybe it's overspill from when i changed the oil last sunday"

or

"i dunno - the guys at the pits said i needed all the factory emissions equipment so i had to source all this crap that have no idea what it does - so i'd guess that'd be some of that"

<--- will generally see you with a low grunt or a "hmm.." and move onto something else.

put up a fight before the process has begun and you will get stickered for stupid things like chrome wipers, aftermarket guages, detailing wax on the windscreen etc etc.

just be patient. if you were driving a white automatic excel you wouldn't have this problem, would you? so don't think they DON;T have the right to pull you over, because they do. they have an obligation to save a lot of morons from themselves, and potentially innocent motorists and pedestrians.

pass the d1ckhead test 3 times and i guarantee the only people pulling you over are power hungry rookies with "sarge" in the passenger seat calming him donw just having a gander at your car.

then there's the highway patrol - they're a whole other kettle of pigs .... er, i mean fish.

Come on folks the title of the thread tells the story.

I agree with those that say that the majority of car enthusiasts are not hoons and enjoy the car form and function.

However the hoons are the problem and deserve what they get and more.

As for what pro-240c says:

I have had cars that attract attention (falling apart) which is almost as bad as the hotted up car but by not being a dickhead with the cops I never had a sticker. Tell the truth with some curtesy and cops usually are OK.

It is all about car control and it is a no brainer that with a limited amount of actual skill the hoon is more likely to total a hotted up car compared to a stock 1200. It does not take a lot of skill to plant the foot and smoke the tires. Sh*it even a brick on an accelerator will do that. I guess that is where thick as a brick comes from.

my 5c worth (don't make 2c any more)

1200coupe,did you encourage your sons friend to come to the next event & have a go himself.
i know in khana & motorkhana you can triple enter,so maybe let the guy have a run in your car.get him so involved he's too busy working on cars to be out lairing around.he sounds like he's just at the right stage to get him involved,he's bored with doing dough-nuts,
but hasn't found anything better yet.

I'm not a hoon. It doesn't affect me I think hoon plates are a great idea.

If you have almost lost all of your points...you are as dangerous as a L plater, and deserve to be treated as such

I wish the s$$ty drivers here got special plates, but instead they distinguish themselves by getting all the windows limo tinted.

Ahhhh NOOOOO
My coupe is not the sort of car you can let the inexperienced just hop in and have a go. Why - button clutches, straight cut option1 reverse "H" patern gearbox, quick steer, brake bias & hydro handbrake does not make for quick easy learning and on top of all that its bloody quick and can catch even the experienced steerer out if you are not careful. Keep in mind that our Kharna's are held on a fairly heavily timbered block of land. I would not be prepared to take the risk and over the years only 2 or three people have been allowed to jump in, one of those being Rick Bates. Those I trust and have long standing rally experience sometimes get the chance but it's not the sort of car that you can turn to someone and say "here mate have a go".
Having said that, I have slowly introduced my son to "learning to go hard", and now three years down the track and I trust his abilities and judgement behind the wheel.
I did make the suggestion that his mate brings his own car out to the next Kharna and join in the fun and I would help him prepare his car to meet the basic regs, its up to him now as to whether he follows it up. Be interesting to see what happens.
My son used to watch the street racers and think it was pretty cool, now however he just laughs and realises that his experience behind the wheel in competition far outweighs anything that anyone could do on the streets. The street are not the place to learn how to drive in competition and under pressure.
