I ended up replacing the starter motor because it shat and the symptoms to this problem were lessened considerably (probably because the motor can turn over a lot better now).

They symptoms are still there however, only not as annoying. It has a very new fuel pump (looks brand new) but could be a dodgy low pressure jobby too???
